Cash: Michael, how are you. Kay: Good. Is this kind of like, you know, you wake up and you go oh my god what happens now? I mean is it something that took you by surprise that Hank would say that? Cash: Uh, you know, NO, because first and foremost we are in New York. You know, the media market of the world and everyday there is usually something that we are ALL reacting to whether it is something I’ve said or anybody else, a player, manager, coaches, you know, ownership. That just, that comes with the territory and you got to be all up for understanding that and I don't necessary think he said anything different than how we feel. And we all feel that he is a starter and there is a game plan in place for him to become a starter. I think the more important aspect in the article of the Times that people are losing focus on is that there is a plan in his quote which addresses that there is a place in place to make him a starter and that is true. He is aware with that. He is on board with that. We all view Chamberlain as an asset, an arm that is worth protecting. And that's the bottom-line and he is as big in favor of that as anybody. I know there is a desire without question to have that type of ability with 4-pitch mixed in the rotation. There is nobody disagrees with that, just the time and place. That will be for another day. And I think honestly Hank wanted him to be in the bullpen today only because he knows that is where he needs to be to protect his arm and there will be a transition down the line for him to be in the rotation. So I kind of think the stuff in the Times is more of him saying the same thing maybe just differently. It is as simple as that. I think we are all on the same page. Kay: Yeah. It is funny because what you said I kind of agree with. Because I have said that Joba should be a starter because that is more valuable than a set up guy. But I think what jumps out from the article from the Times is that maybe it is misinterpreted it seem he wants it to happen today. Do you get that impression as well? Cash: A little bit. It came out in the beginning of the Times that way but then it contradicts itself right away so I don't think that is what he meant. I can’t (say for sure). I was not on the interview. But I know one thing… Kay: It is also hard to do it right away. Just how the way a pitcher is built. Cash: I can tell you based on all the conversations we had he is 110% on board with what we are doing with Joba Chamberlain which means leading him into the rotation and prepare him long term and hopefully becomes someone that can develop into a front line starter that . And he is a believer back in the days, if you turn the clock back, he would not his dad trade (?) and he will let the likes of Jose Reyse develop. We talked about those things. As those type of believe system built in but at the same time there is a process in place to get these guys where you want them to be. Unfortunately, in Joba’s case, his inning limits are going to prevent him from 6 month in the rotation. He knows that too. So we are just going to wait it out. And quite frankly, he’s being a big benefit to us in the pen so far in this early portion of the season, as we have all seen. So, he is helping us at the pen right now but at some point there is no doubt that we are going to. And believe me, he is on the same page with that. When we talked about how we do thing publicly, myself included… I will give you an example today. I will guarantee that tomorrow when I talk about this, people will ask me the question “Is he gonna be in the rotation?” I’ll say “No, he will be in the bullpen.” And it’s gonna get play out as that Cashman stops Joba’s rotation spot. That is not true. (laugh) It is more Hank is the boss of this franchise and I am the employee of this franchise. I am his employee. We talked about what the proper game plans are. And basically we do our best to communicate that with our fan base through the media outlet out there. I think without question that we are on the same page on this issue. And at some point Joba, you know… Our manager, our general manager, our owners, our scouting assessment of him, we all see him as a guy that can potentially be a frontline starter and we all look forward to the day we can seek that out. And there is a game plan that allows that to happen. How it gets communicated, you know, sometimes can get bended about differently but internally we are all on the same page. Kay: I am wondering about the dynamics, Brian, when that quote is handed to you or you find out about what Hank Steinbrenner said, do you then call Hand to see if he in fact said it or you just let it all play out? Cash: I haven’t talked to Hank yet today on it. But I had talked to Hank about everything and certainly Joba among a lot of things many times. No, I haven’t got a chance to talk to Hank yet. But I talked to Hank enough about Joba and his role to know… When I read that article… You know, you quickly go to that 2nd quote of his which is there is a plan in place to make him a starter. He knows what the plan is. We talked about it a lot. So I think that you know… Again it something I don’t know if it is described exactly accurately or misunderstood or whatever it was. But I know Hank and I without a doubt are on the same page on this issue. And I have no reservation on that. I sat here and wait for it tomorrow maybe it will all play out as if, you know, “Him and I aren’t on the same page” or “I am somehow stopping him from starting today against his wishes”… I can honestly tell you none of that is true. He (Hank) knows right now what is best for him (Joba) is to be in the bullpen and he also knows that he is going to get transition into the rotation at the proper time and place and he is 110% on board with it. And he also knows as we all know that as we enter this 2008 campaign our rotation is the weak aspect of it. It is a work in progress. Our strength is our offense. . Our strength is our bullpen. Our weakness is our team defense. Our weakness is our rotation. Right now obviously we are 10-10. That is more because our strength being our weakness than our rotation.
