PETERSBURG, Fla. - The Yankees placed rookie reliever Joba Chamberlain on the major-league bereavement list yesterday so he could attend to his ailing father in Nebraska. Harlan Chamberlain collapsed at the family home in Lincoln on Sunday night and was rushed to St. Elizabeth Regional Medical Center. "He is currently in critical but stable condition," Chamberlain said in a statement released by the team. "We cannot express how much we appreciate the enormous amount of love and compassion that has been shown to my family by so many. I also want to thank my teammates and my manager for giving me so much support when I have needed it most." Chamberlain, 22, received the news via a telephone message from his sister, Tasha Dahlberg, after Sunday's game between the Yankees and Red Sox at Fenway Park. He accompanied the team to Florida, then caught a flight to Nebraska. "It was pretty tough. Joba was shaken up," teammate Phil Hughes said. Chamberlain must stay on the bereavement list a minimum of three days. After seven days, a player can reapply for a seven-day renewal or be placed on the restricted list. The Yankees recalled right-handed reliever Jonathan Albaladejo to replace Chamberlain on the roster. Manager Joe Girardi spoke with Chamberlain yesterday. Harlan Chamberlain is undergoing tests, and the full results won't be known for several days. "He's got to take care of his dad. When the time is right, he'll be back," Girardi said. "Family comes first." Harlan Chamberlain, 55, contracted polio as an infant and now uses a motorized scooter. He is deaf in one ear and does not have full use of his left arm. He was hospitalized for five months in 2006 and 2007 after suffering a ruptured appendix and required two operations. The elder Chamberlain attended the Yankees' three games in Kansas City last week and saw his son pitch. "You can see the pleasure that they get from each other," Girardi said. "Being around each other, the father watching his son play, the son playing so his father can watch. It's a great story. It's kind of what I think America is built on - fathers playing baseball with their sons." Posada improves: Jorge Posada had two throwing sessions before last night's game against the Rays and said his strained right shoulder is improving. Posada made 40 throws from 125 feet, then 20 from 75 feet. "I feel good about how I threw today. I'm encouraged," Posada said. "I felt good. Now I have a little throwing program and I can get going with that." Posada said he felt no pain while throwing. But he offered no prediction as to when he would be able to catch an entire game again. "We'll see," he said. "It feels good." Posada caught an emergency inning in Boston on Sunday night. He hasn't started a game at catcher since last Tuesday in Kansas City. "We're just waiting for the strength to come back, and it's still not there," Girardi said. "It was better today than it was in Boston. It was a significant improvement, but it's still not where it needs to be for him to be behind home plate." Jose Molina, who has been filling in admirably for Posada, strained his left hamstring Sunday night and was out of the lineup last night. "I think it will be only a few days," he said. "It feels better today. My problem is I can't run. But I don't run that fast anyway." Roster moves: The Yankees put infielder Wilson Betemit on the 15-day disabled list because of a case of conjunctivitis that has limited his vision. That enabled them to call up catcher Chad Moeller from Triple-A Scranton. With Posada and Molina injured, he started last night's game. Right-hander Humberto Sanchez was transferred from the 15-day to the 60-day disabled list to make room for Moeller on the 40-man roster. Sanchez is recovering from elbow surgery. Extra bases: Girardi, Derek Jeter and Robinson Cano will wear No. 42 today as Major League Baseball celebrates Jackie Robinson Day. Mariano Rivera is the last active player to wear 42, which was retired throughout baseball in 1997. ...
