NY Post:http://tinyurl.com/2hpqof December 10, 2007 -- The Yankees whiffed in their attempt to sign LaTroy Hawkins four years ago, but this time around the veteran reliever is headed for pinstripes. The right-hander reportedly agreed last night to a one-year contract with the Yankees worth $3.75 million, contingent on him passing a physical. Earlier in the day Hawkins' agent Larry Reynolds had told The Post - without offering specifics - that the two sides were close to striking a deal. Hawkins, who turns 35 later this month, will replace free agent Luis Vizcaino, with whom negotiations stalled last week after the right-hander refused to budge from seeking a multiyear deal. The Yankees are expected to pursue additional bullpen help, as Joba Chamberlain likely will move into the starting rotation. Hawkins appeared in 62 games for the Rockies last season, going 2-5 with a 3.42 ERA. He also made five postseason appearances, posting a 1.80 ERA. The Rockies and Rangers were the Yankees' primary competition for Hawkins, who is 56-76 with a 4.68 ERA over 13 major league seasons. Hawkins had his best seasons pitching for the Twins in 2002 and 2003 before signing with the Cubs in December of '03. The Yankees at the time had offered $12 million over three seasons, but Hawkins took the Cubs' slightly lower offer because it afforded him an opportunity to pitch close to his Gary, Ind., roots. The Yankees ended up using the money to sign Tom Gordon. Hawkins spent less than 1½ years with the Cubs before going to the Giants in a 2005 trade for Jerome Williams and David Aardsma. The following offseason Hawkins was dealt to the Orioles for Steve Kline before signing with the Rockies last winter. --
