While any buzz surrounding the Pirates takes a backseat to Boston and the New York Yankees vying to win over Minnesota with a trade offer for ace left-hander Johan Santana, it does appear outfielder Nate McLouth is drawing interest from multiple teams. Texas is considering trading for McLouth to fill their center field vacancy after they were spurned by free agent Torii Hunter last month. San Diego and Florida are also said to have interest. Multiple clubs are expected to ask Pirates rookie general manager Neal Huntington about left-handed reliever Damaso Marte. The Yankees are right at the front of that, even though they traded Marte to the Pirates in 2001. Much speculation has centered on the Pirates trying to trade left fielder Jason Bay during the meetings, which last through Thursday. However, one club source indicated Sunday night that moving Bay this week is doubtful unless the Pirates are “overwhelmed” by an offer because “you just don’t give your best player away.” There also seems to be little chance the Pirates will be able to dump pitcher Matt Morris this week. Two major-league executives speculated the Pirates would have to eat at least $7.5 million of the $10.5 million left on Morris’ three-year, $27-milion contract to have any chance of finding a taker. --
