But Pettitte said yesterday that he has no intention of testing the market; he will play for the Yankees or not at all. "I'm telling everybody, 'Seriously, I'm just trying to get through the season,'" he said. "I really haven't thought about it." The mediocre free-agent pitching crop includes at the top Bartolo Colon, Curt Schilling, Livan Hernandez and Carlos Silva. But Pettitte said he has no intention of joining that group. Asked if there was any scenario in which he would be on the free-agent market, Pettitte answered flatly, "No. That's the last thing on my mind right now." Asked if that meant he will be with the Yankees or nowhere, Pettitte said, "Yes." When he signed his two-year, $32 million deal -- $16 million this season and a $16 million player option for next year -- Pettitte said it was structured that way to allow him to retire after this season if his sometimes troublesome pitching elbow was a problem. But that has not been the case, which seems to indicate that Pettitte will be back in 2008. "I've been so thankful that my elbow is feeling great," he said. "I did not expect to feel like I'm feeling right now at all." Shelley Duncan, who has started just four of the past 31 games, was sent back to New York last night because of discomfort in his lower abdominal wall. He is to be examined by team physician Stuart Hershon, and manager Joe Torre said Duncan would undergo an MRI today. Torre said Duncan told him last night that he first felt something more than a month ago. Coincidentally, Duncan's brother, St. Louis outfielder Chris Duncan, is out with a sports hernia -- a tear in the muscles of the lower abdomen. Reliever Luis Vizcaino said his shoulder, which kept him out of the weekend series at Kansas City, is fine but that his back is "tight." Vizcaino, whose 70 appearances lead the team, said he will throw a side session today. Hideki Matsui drove in a run for the first time since Aug. 28 with an eighth-inning sacrifice fly. But he went 0-for-4, extending his slump to 4-for-45 (.089), including 0-for-12 with men in scoring position. Ross Ohlendorf, who worked the ninth inning, became the 28th pitcher used by the Yankees this year, tying the team record set it 2005. ... Right-handers Jeff Karstens and Matt DeSalvo were called up from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Derek Jeter was back in the lineup at shortstop after coming out of Saturday's game and sitting out Sunday's game because of a sore right knee. Jeter went 0-for-3 with two walks before coming out for a pinch runner in the eighth inning. --
