Clemens, who was found to have inflammation in the elbow after allowing five runs in four inning Sept. 3 against Seattle, is tentatively scheduled to start Sunday at Boston. General manager Brian Cashman said yesterday that Clemens threw "two light side sessions" while home in Texas. "He felt that the two side sessions went fine," Cashman said. Clemens is to meet up with the team in Toronto and then throw in front of pitching coach Ron Guidry and manager Joe Torre. "They'll assess that and see where we're at," Cashman said. The Boston series features a couple of intriguing pitching matchups. The AL's two winningest pitchers, Chien-Ming Wang of the Yankees and Josh Beckett of the Red Sox, are scheduled to go head-to-head on Saturday. Both are 18-6. Sunday's nationally televised game could be Clemens vs. Curt Schilling. Those were the starting pitchers for Game 7 of the 2001 World Series. Alex Rodriguez, believe it or not, was named AL Player of the Week. Rodriguez, who also won the award once in April and once in June, hit .565 for the week, with seven homers and 11 RBI. Cashman had no new information on shortstop Derek Jeter, who sat out Sunday's game with a sore right knee. The Yankees, who had yesterday off, expect the two days of rest to allow Jeter to be able to play tonight. He may be the designated hitter to avoid the pounding of the artificial turf at Rogers Centre. Ross Ohlendorf, added to the 40-man roster and called up to the majors on Sunday, was moved to a bullpen role this year and seemed to take to it well. "I've enjoyed it," said Ohlendorf, 25. "It took a little while to get used to, just in terms of my arm rebounding." The right-hander out of Princeton, obtained from Arizona in the Randy Johnson trade, was 2-3 with a 5.24 ERA as a starter at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Shortly after missing two months with a back injury, Ohlendorf was converted to relief. In his final six outings, he had a 3.12 ERA with seven strikeouts and one walk in 8 2/3 innings. "He pitched better than the numbers showed," Scranton pitching coach Dave Eiland said. Ohlendorf's sinking fastball impressed the Yankees in spring training, but in relief he used more four-seam fastballs.
