A pregame MRI exam yesterday on his sore right ankle knocked Alex Rodriguez out of his routine and almost out of the Yankees lineup. But Rodriguez played. And he became the first Yankee in 30 years to homer twice in one inning. The resultant eight-run rally gave the team a 10-2 defeat of the Seattle Mariners to win a series critical in the AL wild-card race. "It's finding out how we handle challenges," Yankees manager Joe Torre said. "Tonight was a big challenge for us. The difference between 1-2 (in the series) and 2-1 is huge." The Yankees lead the Mariners by three games, and the Detroit Tigers are 3 1/2 back. Rodriguez said he was "not even" close to full strength. "I would say about 60 (percent)," he said. "I guarantee that if it was April or May, I probably would have taken a day (off), no question. But every game is so important." Rodriguez said he will "probably not" be able to play third base by tomorrow, when the Yankees open a series in Kansas City. The homers, Nos. 511 and 512 of Rodriguez's career, came as the Yankees went from a 2-1 deficit to a 9-2 lead. With 48 homers this season and 26 at home, A-Rod equaled the franchise records for right-handed hitters he set in 2005. No Yankee has hit more than 48 since Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris in 1961. Rodriguez also passed Mel Ott on the career list, tying Ernie Banks and Eddie Mathews for 17th place. "I haven't seen anything like it in all my years playing," Derek Jeter said. "It's not that easy." It wasn't easy yesterday for Rodriguez, a creature of habit who was annoyed that the MRI exam threw his routine way out of whack. Rodriguez suffered his injury sliding into third on Tuesday, as Seattle third baseman Adrian Beltre fell on Rodriguez's ankle and foot. When Yankees trainers saw Rodriguez favoring the ankle in the clubhouse yesterday afternoon, they checked with team physician Stuart Hershon, who recommended the MRI. "I don't understand," Rodriguez said just before leaving Yankee Stadium at 3:30 p.m. "I thought I was ready to roll." While Rodriguez was gone, the Yankees took him out of the lineup. He returned about 5:45 p.m. and went into Torre's office. Rodriguez told Torre he definitely could not play third base. Torre told him to test the ankle to see if he could be the DH. About an hour before game time, Rodriguez went to the right-field warning track and did three jogs of about 90 feet as trainer Gene Monahan and major-league field coordinator Rob Thomson looked on. Rodriguez went back into the training room, and Torre walked in for a final check, asking Rodriguez if he could play without being tentative. "He wanted to look me in the eyes," Rodriguez said, "and make sure that I wasn't lying to him (or) do something stupid or silly. And I told him I could give him some quality at-bats." So Rodriguez was re-inserted into the cleanup spot as the DH. Instead of his usual bevy of pregame swings, Rodriguez last took just a handful in the indoor batting cage. "I didn't want to waste it down there," he said. He didn't. Jarrod Washburn (9-13) held a 2-1 lead going into the bottom of the seventh, but Rodriguez led off with a homer. Of his 48, 20 have tied the game or put the Yankees ahead. Then came an error and a procession of four Seattle relievers who could not stop the bleeding. With Roger Clemens hurt and Mike Mussina in limbo because of his struggles, the Yankees are counting more than ever on 21-year-old Phil Hughes. And although he got no decision, he was sharp last night. "This was more like him," Torre said. "His personality got back here today, and that was important for him." Hughes had allowed five runs in each of his previous three starts. Last night he had more life on his fastball and the confidence to throw it up in the zone, even in hitters' counts. Hughes held the Mariners to two runs on five hits in six innings and struck out six. "The last couple times I was kind of timid, not really attacking the strike zone," Hughes said.
