Aches and Pains Catching Up to Yanks
By TYLER KEPNER
Published: September 6, 2007
Tanyon
Sturtze。
On Tuesday, General Manager Brian Cashman said the Yankees tried to avoid
scheduling magnetic resonance imaging tests unless absolutely necessary. A
day later, at least four players underwent the exam.
Alex Rodriguez, Roger Clemens, Luis Vizcaino and Robinson Cano had M.R.I.s
yesterday. Rodriguez has a sore right ankle; Clemens has an inflamed elbow;
Vizcaino has a sore shoulder; and Cano has a slight hernia of the abdominal
wall.
Rodriguez and Cano started last night against the Seattle Mariners in a
lineup that was revised twice. Rodriguez was initially listed as the third
baseman, but then he was scratched after returning from the hospital. He
jogged on the field during Seattle’s batting practice and spoke with Manager
Joe Torre, who reinserted him as the designated hitter.
“It feels a little sore,” Rodriguez said, before leaving Yankee Stadium to
have the M.R.I. “I was ready to play, but they’re sending me downtown.”
Asked if he was upset about that, Rodriguez said yes. Cashman said the
trainers recommended the test after noticing Rodriguez walking gingerly in
the clubhouse yesterday afternoon. The X-rays taken Tuesday night, after
Rodriguez slid into third and got tangled with the Mariners’ Adrian Beltre,
were negative. The M.R.I. yesterday showed a sprain and a bruise.
“He didn’t call us in the morning to say there’s a problem, but the
trainers saw him and told our doctor,” Cashman said. “I think he probably
thinks it’s a waste of time.”
Clemens, who left Monday’s start because of the elbow, had a cortisone shot
in Houston yesterday. Cashman said yesterday’s M.R.I. matched the one the
Yankees ordered Monday. That test showed fluid buildup around the elbow and
fraying of the connective tissue.
“My understanding is he’s the same, and we’ll slot him when he’s ready to
go,” Cashman said. “We’ll see how his bullpens go.”
Torre said he expected to see Clemens on the Yankees’ next trip, which
starts tomorrow in Kansas City and continues to Toronto and Boston. For now,
Mike Mussina will rejoin the rotation, although not precisely in Clemens’s
place.
Chien-Ming Wang, who left Tuesday’s start with lower back stiffness after
starting the eighth inning with a 10-run lead, will pitch Sunday in Kansas
City. Torre said he expected Mussina to start sometime in Toronto.
Torre said he could tell Wang was feeling better yesterday because he was
running on the field five hours before the game.
The Yankees had planned to give Wang a week between starts, but that would
have forced Wang to pitch at Rogers Center in Toronto, which has artificial
turf.
“The one game I remember in Toronto was ugly,” Torre said, referring to Wang
’s 15-4 loss in Toronto on Aug. 8. “The fact that he’s a sinkerball guy,
if we have a chance to take him off turf, we’ll take it.”
Torre said Vizcaino, his go-to reliever this season, would be shut down for a
few days. Vizcaino, a right-hander, reported right shoulder soreness after
Tuesday’s game, when he allowed two runs, two hits and a walk in two-thirds
of an inning.
Vizcaino is second in the American League in appearances, with 70, and he has
thrown 68 1/3 innings, exceeding his total last season for Arizona. He has
struggled lately, allowing six runs, nine hits and six walks in his last five
and two-thirds innings.
Vizcaino is the latest Yankees setup man to encounter shoulder trouble,
following the departed Tom Gordon and Tanyon Sturtze. That history is a major
reason the organization has imposed strict rules on the usage of Joba
Chamberlain, the 21-year-old phenom who has starred in the late innings.
Speaking about Vizcaino’s M.R.I., Cashman said, “Essentially, there’s
nothing other than, ‘Let’s get him some rest and get him going again.’ ”
Cano, the Yankees’ second baseman, was excused from batting practice for
what Torre called a personal issue. He returned and seemed to be moving fine
in the clubhouse and on the field.
“I’m fine,” Cano said after returning. “I’m going to be out there
playing.”
