Yanks give start to cool, collected rookie Kennedy

Jered Weaver, Weaver
Mike
Kennedy
Scranton
Kennedy。
NEW YORK -- Ian Kennedy was a freshman when he was tabbed to be the 2004
opening-night starter for the University of Southern California.
The Trojans were playing Long Beach State and pitcher Jered Weaver, who later
would be named the college player of the year and get drafted in the first
round by the Los Angeles Angels.
Plenty of cause for nervousness, but Kennedy gave up just one run on two hits
and struck out eight in his five innings.
"He just didn't seem to be rattled," Mike Gillespie, who was the USC coach at
the time before moving to the Class-A Staten Island Yankees, recalled
yesterday. "He didn't seem to be shook. He matched up pitch for pitch. He
never was bothered by that scene.
"He's always been a guy who's been prepared to pitch at the next level in the
big games."
Now, Kennedy, the Yankees' No. 1 draft pick last year, is scheduled to make
his major-league debut Saturday in place of Mike Mussina. The Yankees are
banking on that same composure.
By all accounts, Kennedy is a poised, mature and intelligent pitcher without
awe-inspiring stuff -- but with an idea of how to go after hitters. Much like
Mussina.
"He's got the same windup and everything as (Mussina)," said reliever Chris
Britton, a teammate of Kennedy's at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. "It's
pretty cool."
With Mussina coming off three woeful starts, the Yankees believe Kennedy can
give them a better chance against the Devil Rays, even though it will be
Kennedy's 16th start above Class A.
"He's always in control of himself," Scranton pitching coach Dave Eiland
said. "He's a professional, he's a student of the game. He's learning to read
swings now, too, and he pitches very well to scouting reports."
Kennedy yesterday told The Times-Tribune of Scranton that as he moved up in
the minors he gained confidence.
"You get higher and higher you think, 'I can pitch against these hitters,'"
he said. "You want to get better and get to the next level. That's what I
felt like when I got to Scranton. I pitched a little bit and I thought, 'I
can pitch here already.'"
Tony Franklin, manager of the Double-A Trenton Thunder, said Kennedy should
be able to handle a big-league assignment despite his youth and limited pro
experience.
"He can deliver the goods," Franklin said. "It takes a person with some good
composure to compete at that level. I think Ian's capable of doing that based
on what we saw in Trenton. He was a very even-keeled guy when he was here."
Kennedy throws a fastball (88-91 mph), a curve, a slider and a changeup.
Scouts describe his stuff as average -- meaning average for a major-league
pitcher -- but like his "pitchability." His mound smarts, in other words.
"If they give him an advance report, he'll be fine because he knows how to
pitch," said one scout, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because he
was discussing another team's player.
Another scout, who asked not to be named for the same reason, said
free-swinging Tampa Bay (most strikeouts in the AL) should be a good first
team for Kennedy to face, since he often outsmarts hitters.
"He's going to pitch from the neck up," the scout said. "That gives him a
chance to be successful.
"He's very impressive, for a young kid to be that mature on the mound."
In six starts at Scranton, Kennedy was 1-1 with a 2.08 ERA and just 25 hits
allowed in 34 2/3 innings.
"He doesn't get behind in too many counts," Britton said. "He goes right
after guys. He either makes them put it in play or they're in a hole."
Some teams were wary of Kennedy coming out of college, since he fell to 5-7
as a junior. The Yankees were not put off by the dropoff or Kennedy's
association with agent Scott Boras.
Scouting director Damon Oppenheimer saw it as "a package thing -- quality
stuff and he knew how to use it," and the Yankees wound up signing Kennedy
for a $2.25 million bonus.
Gillespie spoke with Kennedy yesterday and came away feeling Kennedy is as
calm as ever.
"Inasmuch as anybody would be prepared, with as little professional
experience as he's had, he's the guy," Gillespie said.
