"He's auditioning," the Yankees manager joked before last night's game. Torre told Rodriguez on Monday he was planning to keep Rodriguez out of the lineup today, but Rodriguez has been pushing Torre to let him play. If Rodriguez sits, Wilson Betemit would play third base -- and Rodriguez likely would not be the designated hitter. "We haven't committed to anything yet," Torre said. "He came in (Monday) saying he felt revived, and he played like it." Rodriguez had no homers and one RBI in eight games before going 3-for-5 with a homer and three RBI on Monday. "My body felt live (Monday) night, for the first time in about a week," he said. Rodriguez conceded that it took him longer than he expected to recover from being hit on the right calf by a pitch on Aug. 7 "I haven't felt like I had my legs under me for about a week," he said. "(Monday) was the first day I felt like I had my legs back. It was pretty sore for about a week, which is pretty surprising. "Looking back, I should have taken a day or two to rest this calf." The homer Monday was Rodriguez's 40th of the year. With eight 40-homer seasons in his career, Rodriguez tied with Barry Bonds, Harmon Killebrew and Hank Aaron for second behind Babe Ruth (11). "It's pretty awesome," Rodriguez said. "It's pretty humbling." Rodriguez still has not procured the ball from his 500th career homer. "Toughest negotiation of my life," he said. Jose Molina, acquired from the Los Angeles Angels on July 21, got the start last night against his former team. Jorge Posada, who caught all 10 innings Monday, was out of the lineup. Torre said he decided to start Molina last night instead of tonight because Molina and Mike Mussina worked well together on Aug. 11 at Cleveland. "They're not the enemy," Molina said. "Just another team I've got to play against." Joel Zumaya, the hard-throwing Detroit Tigers reliever who came off the disabled list yesterday, has taken notice of the similarities between himself and Yankees rookie Joba Chamberlain. "We'll have a little duel, play a little burnout, see who throws harder," Zumaya told Booth Newspapers. Tigers manager Jim Leyland noticed last weekend that Chamberlain, like Zumaya, will check out his readings on the stadium radar gun while pretending to wipe his face on his sleeve. "I got a kick out of it," Leyland said. "The kid in New York did it exactly the same, to a tee." Projected pitching matchups this weekend in Detroit: Roger Clemens vs. Andrew Miller on Friday; Chien-Ming Wang vs. Jeremy Bonderman on Saturday; Phil Hughes vs. Jair Jurrjens on Sunday; and Mike Mussina vs. Justin Verlander on Monday.
