Matthews Jr.
Willits
105 miles。
Being one of the most dominant teams in baseball this year means the Angels
don't have many friends, but Monday night, at least they found out they have
one buddy they can count on.
Little-used reserve catcher Ryan Budde hit a walk-off double in the bottom of
the 10th inning that drove in Howie Kendrick with the winning run as the
Angels defeated the New York Yankees 7-6 in front of 44,249 at Angel Stadium.
The Angels needed to win to stay two games in front of the the Seattle
Mariners - who defeated Minnesota 9-4 - for first place in the American
League West.
"That was a heck of a game and fortunately, we came out ahead," Angels
manager Mike Scioscia said. "Our bullpen gave us a chance to win the game and
Ryan had a big hit for us.
"He's a hard worker. He's a terrific defensive catcher and he's really worked
with Mickey Hatcher on his hitting. The guys feel great for him."
The Angels won despite Alex Rodriguez's 40th home run of the season, a
two-run shot that gave the Yankees a 4-3 lead in the top of the sixth inning.
Teammate Jorge Posada hit a two-run homer in the eighth inning that tied the
score 6-6.
However, the night belonged to Budde, who entered the game in the ninth
inning and is with the Angels because starting catcher Mike Napoli is still on the
disabled list with a strained right hamstring.
Kendrick had just doubled off Yankees reliever Sean Henn with one out in the
bottom of the 10th inning when Budde, who was batting just .091, stepped up.
Henn ran the count to 2-0 before Budde drove a pitch into the right-center
field.
Yankees center fielder Melky Cabrera gave chase and appeared to have a shot
at catching it but his diving attempt fell short and the ball scooted past
him and into the gap, allowing Kendrick to score easily with the winning run.
In the clubhouse, Budde was mobbed by his teammates as he tried to get to his
locker.
"That was awesome," Budde said. "I was sitting for two hours rooting on my
teammates and then I get a chance to hit and I wind up getting the big hit.
That was the most exciting thing to ever happen to me in my career.
"The count was 2-0 and I was looking for a good pitch to hit and I got a
fastball I could handle. I was watching the ball all the way until it hit the
ground. I thought their center fielder was going to get it, but when it hit
the ground, all I could think of was, 'Wow.' I've been waiting to get to the
big leagues all my life and that was a dream come true. Hopefully, I can stay
up here for a while."
The Angels' win means they once again have taken the season series against
the Yankees. The Angels are 5-2 against them this year, with two games
remaining. In Yankees manager Joe Torre's 12-year tenure, the Angels are
60-54 against him in the regular season. They are the only team in the
Torre-era to have a winning record against the Yankees.
"I don't know why, but they have always been a thorn in our side," Torre
said. "Even when they weren't good when I first started managing. But now,
they're really good. They just keep applying pressure and their entire team
is a real distraction."
The Angels had a chance to take the lead in the bottom of the eighth when
they mounted a rally against Yankees reliever Kyle Farnsworth.
Gary Matthews Jr. led off with a double and Casey Kotchman followed with a
walk. Howie Kendrick sacrificed them both over, putting runners on second and
third with one out for Maicer Izturis, who pinch-hit for Jeff Mathis.
Izturis hit a hard grounder to first base but former Dodger Wilson Betemit
made the play and threw home to retire Matthews at the plate.
That brought up Reggie Willits, who struck out swinging on a controversial
call by third-base umpire Dean Iassogna. Willits thought he checked his
swing, but on the appeal to third, Iassogna ruled that he went around.
Scioscia was so upset that he was ejected before he even reached the field.
It was Scioscia's 19th career ejection as Angels manager.
The Yankees scored a run in the top of the first after Derek Jeter doubled
off Angels starter Dustin Moseley with one out and he came around to score on
a RBI single by Rodriguez. On the play, it appeared Vladimir Guerrero had a
chance for the catch, but he he took an awkward route to the line drive and
the ball hit the ground.
In any event, the Yankees had a 1-0 lead, but it was short-lived.
The Angels came right back in the bottom of the second to take a 3-1 lead
thanks to Mathis. In the inning, Matthews doubled off Yankees starter Phil
Hughes with one out and Kotchman and Kendrick each followed with walks.
That loaded the bases for Mathis, who the Angels put their faith in when they
traded away backup catcher Jose Molina to the Yankees.
Mathis didn't disappoint, as he lined a double down the left-field line that
scored all three runners.
The Yankees, however, got closer in the top of the fourth inning when Hideki
Matsui tripled with one out and scored one batter later on a RBI ground out
by Posada.
With Moseley out after allowing two earned runs in five innings, Angels
manager Mike Scioscia decided to go with Chris Bootcheck.
Bootcheck had been pitching well as of late, but Monday he had a hard time
getting anybody out. Bobby Abreu started the sixth inning by singling and
that brought up Rodriguez.
The count when to 1-0 when Rodriguez crushed the next pitch he saw over the
left-field fence for his 40th home run of the season, giving the Yankees a
4-3 lead.
(The ball shot like a cannon off Rodriguez's bat, producing a stadium
radar-gun reading of "05" because the monitor is only capable of double-digit
figures. The actual velocity of the ball off Rodriguez's bat, confirmed by
the speed-gun operator: 105 mph. --www.latimes.com--)
Hideki Matsui followed with a single and Posada walked, but Bootcheck got out
of the jam without any further damage being done when Robinson Cano grounded
into a double play and Andy Phillips flew out.

Hughes was charged with four hits, five walks and five runs in 6 1/3 innings,
but Yankees manager Joe Torre said the outing was the "most competitive" he's
seen the rookie.
