But, Joe Torre said, Andy Phillips did the right thing when he cut off a relay throw in the third inning instead of letting it go through for a potential play at the plate on Ryan Raburn. But, Torre said, Bobby Abreu's failure to cover second base likely cost the Yankees an out. The play started with Raburn on first and Brandon Inge ripping a ball into the left-field corner. Hideki Matsui fielded it cleanly and threw to Derek Jeter, who threw toward home. Raburn was several yards from the plate when Phillips cut the throw and tried to nail Inge attempting to advance to third by throwing to Alex Rodriguez. But because Jeter was the cutoff man in short left field and Cano trailed Jeter in case of an overthrow by Matsui, there was no one covering second base. Inge sprinted back toward the bag with A-Rod in pursuit and slid in safely. "Bobby should have been at second base," Torre said. "He knew. I went over to him and he said, 'My fault.' On a ball down the left-field line, we have a double cutoff. Andy did the right thing because the throw (to home) was off line." Said Phillips: "That's my play. It's a read play. You have to make your decision and go for it. There may have been a play at the plate, but Jorge would have had to move a little for it.
