Jeter
Guerrero
Roger
Clemens, Jeff Nelson, Paul O'Neil
Sheffield: Grudge & Jury
Comments On Torre, Yanks Stand

NEW YORK - Did you expect Gary Sheffield to apologize? Did you expect him to
come to New York and talk about the good old times?
Bygones rarely become bygones with Sheffield, and he returned Thursday to
Yankee Stadium only reiterating the grievances he has aired about manager Joe
Torre and the three years he spent with the Yankees.
"The only one who wanted me here was George Steinbrenner," Sheffield said. "I
had that cloud over me the whole time. But I know how to perform with a cloud
over me."
Sheffield, tucked into a corner of the visitors clubhouse, came in with the
Tigers, to whom the Yankees traded him in November. A month ago, Sheffield
made headlines when he said African American players were treated differently
by the Yankees, and by manager Joe Torre. When asked about Derek Jeter's
treatment, Sheffield retorted, "He's not all-the-way black."
Jeter and Sheffield, who seemed to have a close relationship as teammates,
hadn't spoken since those remarks, and Jeter would not touch them before the
game Thursday.
"I'm not getting into that stuff," Jeter snapped. "That's a dead issue, let
it die."
Asked if he still considered Sheffield a friend, Jeter said the same thing.
"I'm not getting into that stuff." Would he shake Sheffield's hand? "Why
wouldn't I?" Jeter said.
Said Sheffield: "I don't worry about losing friends. I got enough friends,
what do I need more friends for?"
Sheffield went 0-for-3 with two walks in the Tigers' 8-5 victory. He reached
on Alex Rodriguez's error in the first and scored on Carlos Guillen's grand
slam.
Sheffield said after the game that he chatted briefly with Jeter and that
things were "cool" between them.
"I have no problems with anybody," Jeter said after the game.
The Yankees did not do much fraternizing with the Tigers before the game, but
they knew several Detroit players have contracted a virus and were advised by
team doctors to avoid it.
Sheffield, who was booed when he came to bat in the first, said he meant
nothing derogatory in what he said about Jeter.
"Was that the first time you found out he was half black?" Sheffield asked a
reporter. "Do you know I have a son like that? If I were talking badly about
Jeter, I'd be talking about my son.
"You see, when I have an issue with someone with the Yankees, or the Yankee
organization, they always include Jeter to distort what I say. Derek Jeter is
an icon. He's not going to be treated the same way as Shawn Chacon or Gary
Sheffield. He's bigger than Brian Cashman, he's bigger than Joe Torre. ...
That's what I meant."
Sheffield told the New York Times a day earlier that he was not calling Torre
a racist. Implicit in his remarks, though, is the charge that Torre was more
apt to upbraid an African American player before the entire team. Darryl
Strawberry, who played for Torre in 1996-99, strongly defended Torre against
those charges when Sheffield first made them.
"All I know is what happened while I was here," Sheffield said. "You get
Darryl Strawberry to talk for 15 seconds and you use that to validate things,
you don't have a clue what's going on."
Asked what he liked about his current manager, Jim Leyland, Sheffield said,
"He's real. You get it both sides, the positive and negative, but he's always
real with you."
Torre continued his policy of not responding to Sheffield.
"I'd rather not go there," he said. "I wouldn't know where to end that
conversation."
NEW YORK - Kenny Lofton, who rarely played during his one season in with the
Yankees, told the New York Daily News last week that he did not believe
Torre's decisions were motivated by race.
"I was happy to see Kenny Lofton and Gary Sheffield say Joe Torre was not a
racist," Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said. "I'll leave it at that."
When Sheffield joined the Yankees as a free agent after the 2003 season,
there was division in the organization. Cashman and Torre both preferred
signing Vladimir Guerrero, who was younger and a better defensive player, to
a long-term contract. Steinbrenner, who has always followed he careers of
Tampa-area players, signed Sheffield to a three-year, $39 million contract.
Sheffield had a strong first year, finishing runner-up to Guerrero for MVP,
and he and Torre, at least publicly, expressed mutual admiration. Now,
Sheffield says Torre and Cashman continued to talk about Guerrero thoughout
his first year.
On June 13, 2005, after the Yankees lost a sloppy game in St. Louis, an
enraged Torre screamed at several players, including Sheffield, who played
defense with nonchalant fashion that night. Their relationship appeared to
sour after that. Last season, Torre aired out Chacon after a lackluster
performance in Washington.
However, Torre has aired out many players, of various backgrounds, even
players perceived as his favorites, including Roger Clemens, Jeff Nelson and
Paul O'Neill after a sloppy loss in Atlanta in 2000.
Sheffield missed most of last season with a wrist injury. By the time he came
back in September, the Yankees had Bobby Abreu in right field and tried to
make Sheffield a first baseman. Sheffield did not play well in the playoffs,
and when Torre made a last-minute change, benching him for Bernie Williams in
Game 3, Sheffield fumed.
After the Tigers finished off the Yankees, Cashman picked up a contract
option to retain Sheffield, but when he said he did not want to play first
base in 2007, the Yankees traded him for prospects. Sheffield then got a
two-year extension on his contract from the Tigers.
"You'll never see that again, trust me," said Sheffield, who negotiates
without an agent. "I'm 38 years old, coming off a year when I didn't play,
and I get three years and I get a raise."
