With Wednesday night's loss to Fausto Carmona, the Tigers fell to .500 in games in which right-handers start against them. They are 12 games over when lefties face them -- and 12 over for the season. There's not much mystery here. The Tigers were a predominatly right-handed team when the season began. They have become even more so now. Switch-hitter Carlos Guillen hasn't hit a homer since the All-Star break. Sean Casey has three homers for the season. And Curtis Granderson, for all his triples and extra-base hits, has now gone three weeks without a homer. And Guillen, Casey and Granderson basically represent the left-handed part of the Tigers' everyday attack. In these last three weeks, the Tigers have one homer from a left-handed batter. Casey hit it against Tampa Bay. The lack of left-handed power is one reason the Tigers haven't won a series in those three weeks. As as it has other times in recent years, the Tigers lack of left-handed power is showing. It seems more and more evident they will need to try to find a left-handed hitter in the off-season. The Tigers had their three big sluggers up against Carmona as the potential tying run in the eighth last night. But all three of those sluggers were right-handed. It's a situation where you'd like to have a left-handed power threat to mix in there. The Yankees will pitch three right-handers against the Tigers: Mike Mussina tonight, Roger Clemens on Saturday and Chien-Ming Wang on Sunday. Lefty Andy Pettitte will start Friday night. In his first at-bat tonight, Guillen -- batting left-handed -- launched a first-inning grand slam off Mike Mussina. Then Cleveland will come to Detroit next Tuesday-Wednesday, and it is scheduled to start its three right-handers: Carmona, Byrd and Jake Westbrook. How much will the Tigers see right-handed closer Mariano Rivera this week? In today's New York Post, columnist Joel Sherman says that Rivera's struggles in the last four days (he's got a loss, a blown save and a shaky save) can be traced to all the times that manager Joe Torre, lacking in reliable alternatives, often used Rivera for more than one inning in the last few months.
