The conductor of the band at the time, Col. Alan Bonner, told me that he wanted a major work for wind band. 第三交响曲系由华盛顿D.C.美国空军乐队委托创作。当时的指挥 Col. Alan Bonner 表示他想要一首写给管乐团的作品。 He said that he didn't care about style, length, difficulty, or anything else -I was given complete freedom to write whatever I wanted to. I began to work on it in earnest at a very difficult time in my life, right after our baby daughter, Natalie, died. 他说他不介意曲子的形式、长度、难度或任何其他条件，我拥有全然的创作自由。 我热切的开始写曲时，正处於人生中的一个低点--就在我的小女儿 Natalie 刚过世之时。 This symphony is the most emotionally draining work that I have ever composed.
