TOASTMASTERS
How Toastmasters works
At Toastmasters, members
learn by speaking to groups and working with
others in a
supportive environment. A typical Toastmasters club is made up
of 20 to 30 people who meet once a week for about an hour. Each meeting gives
everyone an opportunity to practice:
▲
Conducting meetings
Meetings usually begin with a short business session which helps members
learn basic meeting procedures.
▲
Giving impromptu speeches
Members present one-to two-minute impromptu speeches on assigned topics.
▲
Presenting prepared speeches
Three or more members present speeches based on projects from the
Toastmasters International Communication and Leadership Program manuals.
Projects cover such topics as speech organization, voice, language,
gestures, and persuasion.
▲
Offering constructive evaluation
Every prepared speaker is assigned an evaluator who points out speech
strengths and offers suggestions for improvement.
The Tools You Use
Upon joining a Toastmasters club, each new member receives a variety
of manuals and resources on speaking. Members also have access to other
books as well as audio and video cassettes on speaking and leading.
They also receive the award-winning The Toastmaster, a monthly magazine
that offers the latest insights on speaking and leadership techniques.
Toastmasters and Leadership
Leadership cannot be learned in a day. It takes practice. In Toastmasters
members build leadership skills by organizing and conducting meetings and
motivating others to help them. Club leadership roles and a leadership
development program also offer opportunities to learn and practice. Just as
Toastmasters members learn to speak simply by speaking, they learn leadership
by leading.
Company Benefits
A company's success also depends on communication. Employees face an endless
exchange of ideas, messages, and information as they deal with one another
and with customers day after day. How well they communicate can determine
whether a company quickly grows into an industry leader or joins thousands
of other businesses mired in mediocrity.
Toastmasters provides the tools that enable employees to become
effective communicators and leaders – all at a very low cost.
Toastmasters training helps employees:
▲ give better sales presentations
▲ hone their management skills
▲ work better with fellow employees
▲ effectively develop and present ideas
▲ offer constructive criticism
▲ accept criticism more objectively
Toastmasters produces results. Around the world more than three million
men and women of all ages and occupations have benefited from Toastmasters
training, and more than one thousand corporations, community groups,
universities, associations, and government agencies now use Toastmasters
training.
Community Benefits
Toastmasters has helped many members in their community service activities.
Using the speaking and leadership skills developed in Toastmasters, people
have become more active in business, churches, and service and charity
organizations. Toastmasters members are able to organize activities, conduct
meetings, and speak in public as their organization's representative. Some
even become active in local, state or national government.
Becoming a Member
Toastmasters is for individuals 18 years or older. The more than 170,000
members are from a variety of occupations and backgrounds. They include
doctors, auto mechanics, executives, teachers, homemakers, artists, college
students, supervisors, attorneys, engineers, salespersons, and more.
Joining a Toastmasters club is easy. With more than 8,000 clubs around
the world, there is sure to be one near you. Many clubs are listed with
Chambers of Commerce or can be located by contacting Toastmasters
International. Once you receive a listing of clubs in your area, simply
select one most convenient for you, attend a meeting, and then apply for

标题 How does Toastmasters work?

Toastmasters makes learning fun!
This non-profit organization offers a proven – and enjoyable – way to
practice
communication and leadership skills. Here's how it works:
A Toastmasters meeting is a learn-by-doing workshop in which
participants develope their speaking and leadership skills in a friendly
atmosphere. A typical group has 20 to 40 members who meet weekly or biweekly
to practice public speaking techniques.
Members learn communication skills by working in the
Competent Communication
manual, a series of 10 self-paced speaking assignments designed to install a
basic foundation in public speaking. Participants learn skills related to
use
of humor, gestures, eye contact, speech organization and overall delivery. When
finished with this manual, members can choose from 15 advanced manuals to learn
skills related to specific interests.
Members also learn leadership skills by
taking on various meeting roles and
serving as officers at the club and district levels, and by working in the
Competent Leadership manual and the High Performance Leadership program. In
skills; we give them responsibilities and ask them to lead.
There is no instructor in a Toastmasters meeting. Instead, members evaluate
one another's presentations. This feedback process is a key part of the
program's success. Meeting participants also give impromptu talks on
assigned topics, conduct meetings, serve as officers in various leadership
roles and learn rules related to timing, grammar and parliamentary procedure.
Thousands of corporations sponsor in-house Toastmasters clubs. Businesses and
government organizations have discovered that Toastmasters is an effective,
cost-efficient means of meeting their communication training needs.
Toastmasters groups also can be found in governmental agencies, as well as in
a variety of community organizations, prisons, universities, hospitals,
military bases and churches.

It Really Works!
Don't worry! Everyone in a Toastmasters club was once at the level you are
now. The environment is
friendly and supportive, and the self-paced program
allows you to build confidence with each speaking assignment.
And you'll love the applause!
Constructive evaluation is the heart of the
Toastmasters program. Each time you give a prepared speech, an evaluator will
point out strengths and suggest improvements.
What Happens When I Join?
With more than 220,000 members in 11,300 clubs in 90 countries, you're sure
to find a meeting near you. Most groups meet weekly or biweekly for one to
two hours. The meetings are organized so that everyone will have a chance to
speak, should they want to. You schedule your own speaking assignments a few
weeks in advance, so you'll have plenty of time to prepare.
Speaking assignments are varied, with the first one designated as an “ice
breaker” – a description of yourself and your life that lasts between five
and seven minutes. You'll be assigned a mentor to help you settle in and get
through your first speaking roles. As you grow in confidence, you assignments
will grow with you.
Importantly, whenever you stand up and speak, you receive encouraging,
helpful feedback on how it went and how you can improve next time.
