Syllabus Continental Philosophy of Language and Mind: An Introduction to Aristotle, Kant, Frege and Husserl. Graduate course, open also for advanced undergraduates The idea of this course is to give an introduction to the philosophy of language and mind, less in the analytic, but more in the continental traditions. This is therefore an unusual course. We will read classical texts and stay close to them, sometimes following the text word by word. From Aristotle, we will read On Interpretation, a short essay on the nature of language, words, sentences, meaning, contradictions, and dialectic. From Kant we will read parts of the Critique of pure Reason, the so-called “Deduction of the Categories”, which is about perception, thought, judgment, and consciousness. We are doing fine to read and to learn from these two philosophers. They are classics. From there we will follow Frege and Husserl, who developed their views at the same time, but in very different directions. While Frege is now seen as the father of analytic philosophy, Husserl developed phenomenology. These two thinkers had quite different ideas about meaning, thought, and how one should go about studying them. They used and developed different methods. From Frege, we will read his essays The Thought and Sense and Reference, and the beginning of his Begriffsschrift. Husserl’s views are broader. He thought about how we perceive and develop an understanding of the world. He was concerned with subjectivity, time, and consciousness. We will read from his Logical Investigations, Ideas, and Experience and Judgment. This will carry us into the spring semester, during which I intend to continue this course with Husserl again, Heidegger and Wittgenstein, all on meaning, language, and mind.
