I guess the reason why we still need the concept of sovereignty is as follows: First, different culture and ethnic group has different meanings of well-being. The so-called "human rights" or the "fundamental values" may not be the most important for people in Third World. Second, people has the right to decide their own way of living. No other people could do this decision in their place. This is exactly an extension of self-determination. People not only have the right to determine which state they belong to, but also have the right to decide their way of living, and what value to pursue. Under those premises, it is obvious that the concept of sovereignty is a must. As mentioned during class today, sovereignty is the supreme authority over specific territory. A very important function of sovereignty is to prevent foreign power to intervene, in turn making it possible to let local people live their own way.
