This is the university pond, where people were still allowed to go row
boating in the 1950's
In the early days the Taiwanese economy relied on forest products. Because
the area here the logging industry was booming, the flatter area nearby was
chosen to establish a ‘depot’ to store the logs temporarily
The essential requirements for a ‘depot’ are a gently sloped area, it needs
to have enough space for personnel to operate machines and at the same time
provide a place to position the logs.
If the scale of logging increases and the working period increases it’s best
to create a pond to store the logs in.
This is because when the turnover time is long, people were worried that the
special species of trees would develop pests and would decay when lying in
the open area in the sun. The best solution which would preserve the trees
and keep the market price high is to immerse the logs into the pond.
National Taiwan University’s “Xi-tou University Pond” was the place of
University of Tokyo forest which stored logs during the Japanese occupation
period, but at that time wasn’t named University Pond yet.
After the Japanese occupation logging in this area gradually decreased and
the “Xitou University Pond” was no longer used.
In order to increase the amount of people to use this combined landscape and
resting place, the National Taiwan University Experimental Forest management
performed renovations. Over the years they protected the pond’s shore,
reorganized the environment, planted flowers and trees for beautification and
built a bamboo ridge. This bridge is the centerpiece of the Xitou University
Pond and has become well-known in the area
Everybody looks at this bamboo bridge carefully, which nowadays actually is
not only built with bamboo. For the safety of the tourists reinforced
concrete pillars, imitating bamboo log shapes, are buried underground and
steel suspension wires are supporting the bridge.
Besides the large bamboo bridge another smaller bamboo bridge is present,
which doesn’t have any support like pillars or steel wires. Instead this
bridge is completely renewed every year.
Both the bridge decks are paved with wood treated to stop rotting and its
ingredients are much harder so the tourist don’t have to worry while walking
and watching the scenery.
The University Pond’s main bridge is approximately 70 meters long, 1.5
meters wide and about 6 meters above the water. It is an unusual large-scale
artificial bamboo bridge and is famous all over Taiwan and China.
