EE NTU, 1980. -- Fellow of IEEE , Fellow of SPIE -- Research Interests: Data Compression and Communication Multimedia Database Management Wavelets and Multiresolution Signal Processing Technology <Abstract> After the introduction of digital computers, digital signal processing t s have been widely applied to speech, audio, video and graphics in various comme rcial applications. Digital media offers great advantages over the traditional a nalog media in two folds: the high-resolution format for signal representation a nd the great freedom in signal manipulation (e.g. compression). Speech was first digitized for transmission via multi-rate filter banks in late 60's, which prov ed to be one of the very early applications of digital signal processing. Then, image was digitized for flexible manipulation such as edge detection and texture segmentation in 70's. In 90's, digital audio and video has become more accessib le to end users in form of consumer electronics such as audio CD and DVD. For th e last several years, we have seen that the digital still camera (DSC) is replac ing the traditional optical-based camera while the digital 2G and 2.5G cellular phones have already replaced the analog 1G cellular phones. In the near future, we will see the last revolution from a consumer analog product to its digital co unterpart, which is the conversion from analog to digital TV. This talk will pro vide an exciting history of digital media revolution.
