明天上课预计讨论的问题,请大家多多指教
1. Miliaras tries to establish a link between the grotesque and
Burne-Jones's juxtaposition of love and death.
The idea of the grotesque can be understood as combining disparate
ideas in one painting (or work) and having horrifying, ridiculous,
or bizzare qualities.
Can you see any of these elements in Burne-Jones's paintings
(mentioned in the article or outside)?
How does Burne-Jones place love and death together?
(that is, if you agree with Miliaras)
明天上课会花一点点时间再讲一下 grotesque 的字源和conotations,上面那样打
只是因为我有点懒 :p
2. Miliaras contends that Burn-Jones was deeply influenced by his
(tragic and painful) love affair, and that his paintings show his
own psychosexual ambiguities. Do you think it is necessary to read so
much biographical information into the paintings?
3. Please comment on the "fatal destructiveness" of the sexually unawakened
innocent young virgins in his paintings.
Concerning "The Tree of Forgiveness":
1. How might the spectator identify with the figures in the paintings?
(Sims's argument)
What might be the effect of such a direct gaze?
2. What might be the intention behind Burne-Jones’s choice to invert
the original story?
Do you think the title and the subject relate to each other well?
* * *
4. How is the gaze of Burne-Jones’s female figures different
from that of Rossetti's (for instance, Lady Lilith or Bocca Baciata)?
* * *
Concerning "The Wheel of Fortune":
1. How would you characterize Fortuna?
2. Traditional medieval representations of Fortuna depict her wheel
having four shelves with four human figures portraying
a future king, a present king, a past king, and a man with no
kingdom. Burne-Jones paints a slave over a king over a poet.
What is the significance in this reversal of hierarchy?
* * *
(Sims's article)
5. "…Burne-Jones's painting ushers the newly feminized spectator to its
semiotic precipice." How would you interpret "feminized spectator"? (87)
6. How does the "mythic plenitude brought into being" through the
"anguished poetics" verge on the Dionysian? (87)
7. Do you agree that the Briar Rose series is “no series at all,
but a collection of synchronous moments that stand in contiguous
relation to one another”? (91)
8. How does Morris’s poem change the mood and “offer [the] frozen
stasis the gift of time”? Do you agree that it is actually the
“ideal spectator” that “smite the sleeping world awake” (93)?
9. How would you interpret the spectator’s role as “co-creator” or even “
suitor”?
* * *
Concerning "King Cophetua and the Beggar Maid"
1. How would you characterize Penelophon’s gaze?
Do you agree it “rebukes late-Victorian materialism and imperialism”?
Or does it even demand that the king accept his own castration?
2. How does the window function? How would you interpret the concept
of time (past, present, future) through this device?
3. What might be the role of the singers?
* * *
10. How would you characterize Burne-Jones's female figures and their
somewhat empty and vacant look? Do you agree with Sims's argument?
*
问题好像有点长...不过这些大概是主要会想讨论的地方
依据老师的指示(笑) 不会花太多重点在文章本身
应该会比较针对某几张图讨论
有任何建议请不吝提出
感谢!
