Abstract:
This lecture will explore the challenges indigenous feminists face in their
negotiation between indigeneity and feminism in the different contexts of
the United States and Taiwan. It will suggest that feminism in these indigenous
communities is not just about gender issues but also about different systems
and theories of knowledge, i.e., epistemology. This intersection among
indigeneity, feminism, and epistemology points to two important tasks that we
must perform: to expose the blind spots in feminist knowledge when it comes to
indigeneity, and to understand indigenous feminism in the context of the
emergent "IK" (Indigenous Knowledge) movements around the world.
In this process, this lecture will investigate the limits of feminist formations
such as "whitestream feminism," "women of color feminism," "Third World
feminism," "transnational feminism" and "postcolonial feminism" when
intersecting with indigeneity, and consider how indigenous knowledges may be
accounted for in new thinkings on feminist epistemology.
