Abstract:
This presentation examines Ammons’ book-length poem Garbage. Ammons wrote the
poem at the age of 63, and he used the poem to examine the elective affinities
between the wasting away of the aged body and the nature of decay in the
physical and social worlds. Through this examination, Ammons is able to
interrogate America’s various obsessions with absence and presence. Said
interrogation is wrought through an attempt by Ammons to absence the self: by “
ghosting” his aged body, he in fact celebrates the presence of both things
thought (or wished) absent and things essentially made absent through our lack
of attention to them. While the poem is a meditation on the subject position
of the aged male subject, such a meditation in essence becomes a celebration of
overlooked presences, oversights that marginalize the spiritual value of many
kinds of “garbage”.
The presentation will conclude with a discussion of how Ammons’ insights lead
to some understanding of recent attempts in World Cinema and American art to
examine the aged male subject.
