A flawed election in Kenya turned violent; unexpectedly relatively-fair elections in Pakistan and Thailand effectively brought back civilian rule; the “election” in Russia confirmed the current president’s choice for his successor; and the ruling party in the Republic of China is widely expected to lose the election for president. Called the “Greatest Show on Earth,” by The Economist, the American presidential election to be held on Tuesday, November 4, will dominate this profound and tumultuous year in presidential politics around the globe. Unlike the elections mentioned above, the election for president of the United States is not direct; that is, a constitutionally mandated system called the Electoral College is used instead to determine the outcome for that office. The presentation will cover the constitutional basis and mechanisms for the Electoral College, its etymology and history, its effect on recent elections (notably the 2000 election), and its possible effect on the outcome of this year ’s poll. 外文系系办 --
