Identification: 36% 1. Who is this fatally wounded woman? Unlucky woman, burning, in her madness Roamed through all the city, like a doe Hit by an arrow shot from far away By a shepherd hunting in the Cretan woods -- Hit by surprise, nor could the hunter see His flying steel had fixed itself in her; But though she runs for life through copse and glade The fatal shaft clings to her side. 2. Who is this man who threw his spear at the horse? He boke off then And rifled his big spear with all his might Against the horse's flank, the curve of belly. It stuck there trembling, and the rounded hull Reverberated groaning at the blow. 3. Who is this old man? Seeing his city captive, seeing his own Royal portals rent apart, his enemies In the inner rooms, the old man uselessly Put on his shoulders, shaking with old age, Armor unused for years, belted a sword on, And made for the massed enemy to die. 4. Who is speaking? "What are you doing with such manly arms, lascivious boy? That bow befits our brawn, wherewith we deal out wounds to savage beasts and other mortal foes, unerringly: just now with our innumerable arrows we managed to lay low the might Python, whose pestilential belly covered acres! Content yourself with kindling love affairs with your wee torch -- and don't claim our glory!" 5. Who is this sad man? Alone in his chamber, distraught and anguished, he called his beloved repeatedly, but to no avail. He lamented and sighed, fainting from time to time; a hundred times he cried to her to have mercy, to come and speak with her beloved. He cursed his heart and his mouth and it was a wonder he did not kill himself. His cries and moans were not loud enough nor his agitation and torment such that she would have mercy on him, or even permit him to see her. Alas what will he do? 6. Who is this miserable woman? Having no arms, she could not stretch them out in supplication to her warden, Argus; and when she tried to utter a complaint she only mooed -- a sound which terrified her, fearful as she now was of her own voice. 7. Who is the speaker of the following passage? ... I shall dispatch you safely with an escort, Provisioned from my stores. Or would you care To join us in this realm on equal terms? The city I build is yours; hual up your ships; Trojan and Tyrian will be all one to me. 8. Who is the "she" in this following passage? ... on hearing Adriano's voice, she realized at once whose bed she was sharing. So being a person of some intelligence, she promptly got up without a word, seized her baby's cradle, and having picked her way across the room, which was in total darkness, she set the cradle down beside the bed in which her daughter was sleeping and scrambled in beside her. 9. Who is speaking? I well believe that you do not like this kind of pleasure. I have been told often enough that you have no desire for women. You have well- trained young men and enjoy yourself with them. Base coward, wicked recreant, my lord is extremely unfortunate to have suffered you near him. I think he may have lost his salvation because of it. 10. Who is this "terrified goddess"? Dis saw her, seized her and carried her off; his love was that hasty. The terrified goddess cried out for her mother, her playmates -- but for her mother most often, since she had torn the uppermost seam of her garment, and tha gathered flowers rained down from her negligent tunic; because of her tender years and her childish simplicity, even this loss could move her to maiden sorrow. 11. Who is this young bride? Along with her new clothes, the young bride appeared to take on a new lease of life, and she seemed a different woman entirely. Shw was endowed, as we had said, with a fine figure and beautiful features, and lovely as she already was, she now acquired so confident, graceful and decorous a manner that she could have been taken for the daughter of ... some great nobleman ... 12. What is this tree simile about? And just as when the north winds from the Alps This way and that contend among themselves To tear away an oaktree hale with age, The wind and tree cry, and the buffeted trunk Showers high foliage to earth, but holds On bedrock, for the roots go down as far Into the underworld as cresting boughs Go up in heaven's air: just so this captain, Buffeted by a gale of pleas This way and that way, dinned all the day long, Felt their moving power in his great heart, And yet his will stood fast; tears fell in vain. II. Definition: Write a short passage of 25 words to define or explain any FOUR of the following terms. 20% 1. Avalon 2. fabliaux 3. Sinon 4. pietas 5. Arethusa 6. vision of hindsight III. Please keep in mind that the storytellers of these two stories are aristocrats. [试题结束] --
