1. (10 pts) Write down the chemical formula of the following compounds.
a. Triaquabromoplatinum(II) fluoride
b. Potassium hexacyanovanadate(III)
c. 4-Ethyl-2-heptyne
2. (15 pts) The molecular orbital theory (MO) and the valence bond theory have
different predictions for the magnetic property of O2 molecules. Explain
their predictions. Which one is correct?
3. (15 pts) Consider the MO of a homonuclear diatomatic molecule. Let HAA = HBB
= -3eV, HAB = -1eV, SAB =0.1 Calculate the two MO energies.
4. (10 pts) According to Pauli, what is the relation between the particle spin
and the exclusion principle?
5. (10 pts) A helium atom is excited to have the electron configuration 1s12s1
where one electron is in 1s wave function φ1s(r) and the other electron is
in 2s wave function φ2s(r). Write down the (space part) of the two electron
wave function ψ(r1,r2) for the singlet and tje triplet states. Which one
should have a lower energy? Why?

6. (10 pts) What is the basic idea of hard/soft acid/base and why is it useful?
Give at least one example for each of these four typical classes.
7. (20 pts) Use the simplest MO to calculate the π system MO of C5H5. Assume
that α = HAA are all the same for A =1,2,3,4,5 where A is the label for the
carbon atoms, β = HAB fpr the neighboring carbons, and the neglect the
overlap integral and the other HAB.
(1) Calculate the MO energies.
(2) Calculate the wave functions of the MO.
(3) Plot the wave functions.
8. (10 pts) In the aqueous solutions, ions like Cu2+ or Ni2+ have deep colors
whereas Zn2+ is transparent. What makes such differernt light adsorption
properties?
9. (15 pts) In the transition metal complex of Cr3+, some ligands like Br- are
π donors whereas some ligands like CO are π acceptors. Draw an energy
diagram to explain the origin of the different behaviors.
