1. For the structures of ionic crystal CsCl and NaCl, list the first six terms
for calculating the Madelung constant in both cases. The Madelung constants
for CsCl and NaCl are 1.76267 and 1.74756, respectively
2. Calculate the packing efficienty of (i) a body center cubic and (ii) a
cubic structures. In a cubic structure, if the central "cubic hole" is
filled fully with a different atom, calculate (iii) the radius ratio and
(iv) the total packing efficiency.
3. The dipole moments of AsCl3 and NH3 are 1.59 and 1.47 D (Debye),
respectively and the bond moments of As-Cl and N-H are 1.60 and 1.33 D,
respectively. Draw a reasonable structure of AsCl3 and NH3. Give proper
equations that determine the bond angle θ of Cl-As-Cl and H-N-H.
4. Briefly describe adnd explain the Trouton's rule. Two compounds MeOH and
acetic acid are known to deviate oppositely and significantly from the rule
. Explain positive and negative deviations.
5. In the reactions between solid surface and gas or liquid, the parabolic
rate law is described as: formation of the thickness of the product layer x
is equal to (2kt)^1/2 where k is rate constant and t is time. Derive the
rate law and discuss the units of the rate constant in comparison with
those for a first-order reaction of solid. Under what condition this law
will hold?
6. Draw the unit cell or packing of the following structures:
(i) Spinel, MgAl2O4; (ii) Perovskite, CaTiO3; (iii)Zinc blende, ZnS;
Wurtzite, ZnS; (iv) ReO3 and (v) CaF2.
7. Metals that have the ccp (cubic closest packing) structure are very
malleable (can be rolled or beaten into sheet) and ductile (can be drawn
into wire). Why are these characteristics favored for ccp rather than for
hcp (hexagonal closest packing).
8. Descruibe the principle of differential scanning calorimetry. What kind of
data can you obtain from this technique analytical method?
9. A solid spherical particle is assumed to react only the surface and the
rate is determined by the surface area S:rate = kS. The fraction of the
reaction complete is denoted by α. Derive the rate equation:
1-(1-α)^1/3 = k"t Find the k" in terms of k.
10. The following graph are IR spectra of MeOH in CCl4 at various
concentration, assign the peaks and explain.
