1. (a) Describe the mechanism of the production of a LMM Auger electron and
X-ray fluorescence (XRF) photon in Auger electron spectroscopy (AES)?
(b) Describe the mechanism of emitted (1s) electron in X-ray photoelectron
spectroscopy (XPS/ESCA) and how it is possible to distinguish between
XPS and Auger electron peaks? (5 points each)
2. An XPS electron was found to have a kinetic energy of 1073.5 eV when
Mg K alpha source was employed (hv - 1253.6 eV). The electron spectrometer
had a work function of 14.7 eV. (10 points)
(1) Calculate the binding energy for the emitted election in the source
(2) If the signal was from a S(2s) electron, was the analyte S2-. S0
SO320 or S042-? see Fig. 1
(3) What would the kinetic energy have been if an Al K alpha source had
been used (hv = 1486.6 eV)?
(4) If the emitted electron with the Mg K alpha source had been Auger
electron, what would its kinetic energy be with Al K alpha source?
3. The following figure (Fig. 2) shows the chemical shifts in Carbon 1s X-ray
photoelectron spectrum for ethyl trifluoroacetate, please indicate and
explain which functional group in ethyl trifluoroacetate belong to the four
peaks, respectively? (10 points)
4. How does static SIMS instrumentally differ from dynamic SIMS? how does the
information obtain differ? What is imaging SIMS? What type of information is
obtained with imaging SIMS? (10 points)
5. (a) What are the strengths and disadvantages of SIMS compared to
XPS/ESCA/AES? (5 points)
(b) What is crater side-wall effect in SIMS? (5 points)
6. (a) Name 3 possible sources of signals with SEM.(5 points)
Differentiate between elastic and inelastic scattering of electrons.
(b) How contrast change (bright/dark) in the backscattered electrons (BE)
and secondary electrons (SE) when atomic number increases, respectively
(5 points)
7. Describe how wavelength dispersive spectrometer (WDS) works and what is
Rowland circle. (10 points)
8. Describe how energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS) works and what are
Fe K alpha and Fe L beta X-ray? (10 points)
9. Explain:
(1) mass-thickness and diffraction contrast
(2) bright field and dark field
(3) Which diffraction pattern in the following figure (Fig.3) is
amorphous polymer? (10 points)
10. Describe the mechanism of energy loss electron and try to explain the
region(I, II, III) in the following electron elergy loss spectroscopy(EELS)
(Fig. 4). (10 points)
