1. (20 pts) Write down the chemical formulae of the following compounds.
a. cis-4-octene
b. 3-Propyl-2-hexene
c. 2,3-Dimethyl-3-ethylheptane
d. sodium hexacyanoferrate(II)
e. triaquabromoplatinum(II) chloride
2. (15 pts) Alkyl halides can be formed by irradiating UV light on the mixture
of alkanes and halogens.
Describe the reaction mechanism of such reaction.
3. (20 pts) Consider the molecular orbital method, and valence bond theory.
Write down the two electron (ground state) wave functions of H2 molecule
for the two different theories. Compare the similarity and the difference
of the two theories.
4. (10 pts) Draw the correlation diagram of O2 molecule. Is it diamagnetic or
paramagnetic? Why?
5. (15 pts) The ion Co 3+ forms coordination compounds with ligand NH3 and Cl-.

One of the compound is denoted as [Co(NH3)4Cl2] (Cl-) by Werner. Why did he
distinguish the different chloride ions? What is the experimental basis for
making such distinction?
6. (30 pts) Consider the πsystem of the 1,3-butadiene. Use the 2p atomic
orbitals φ_1, φ_2, φ_3, and φ_4 to construct the approximate MO wave
function ψ ≒ C1 φ_1 + C2 φ_2 + C3 φ_3 + C4 φ_4. Suppose that
H11 = H22 = H33 = H44 = -5 eV, H12 = H23 = H34 = -3 eV,
H13 = H14 = H24 = 0, S12 = S13 = S14 = S23 = S24 = S34 = 0.
Calculate the energies and the relative coefficients of the four molecular
orbitals. Draw the MO wave functions. (Hint: You may consider separately
the ''odd function'' where C1 = -C4, C2 = -C3, and the ''even function''
where C1 = C4, C2 = C3.)
7. (15 pts) How does one determine the spectrochemical series experimentally?
8. (20 pts) The ligand H2O makes high spin [Mn(OH2)6]2+ coordination complex
whereas CO malkes a low spin complex [Mn(CO)6]2+. Draw the suitable MO
diagrams to explain the origin of the difference.
