I. Spot passages. Answer the following questions by means of a few sentences
in the space provided below. Except for cases of identification, complete
sentences are still necessary. 60%
1. "Again the guns disturbed the hour,
Roaring their readiness to avenge,
As far inland as Stourton Tower,
And Camelot, and starlit Stonehenge."
Explain the significance of concluding the poem with the three place names.
2. "No wonder of it: sheer plod makes plough down sillion
Shine, and blue-bleak embers, ah my dear,
Fall, gall themselves, and gash gold vermilion."
What quality does the speaker emphasize in choosing the images of "sillion"
and "embers"? With what is the speaker connecting the quality?
3. "Each mortal thing does one thing and the same"
What does each mortal thing do in Hopkins's belief? What examples taken
from nature has he given to support this point in "As Kingfishers Catch

achieve?

7. Choose one feature of British modernism to discuss on the basis of
textual evidence of at least two writer's poetry.
