In your answers, do not quote from the poems (any direct quotations
will be discarded when grading), but paraphrase them. And always give
substantial proportion of your answers to the contents of the poems, except,
of course, for purely formalistic questions (such as Question #1).
1. Scan poem no.1 (On Her loving Two equally) and map out its overall scheme
of rhyme (not just end rhyme, but other forms of rhyming as well, e.g.
alliteration) and meter. (5%)
2. Summarize the contents of poem no.1 and explain how form accords well with
content in this poem by focusing on the irregularity you should have noticed
in its external form. (5%)
3. Explain the external form of "the sonnet" by using poem no.2 (That time of
year thou mayst in me behold) as illustration; as "iambic pentameter" is one
of them, be sure to explain what it means. (5%)
4. Explain what "internal structure" is by using poem no.2 as illustration.(5%)
5. Explain how "title" is important for understanding a poem by using poem
no.3 (The Vacuum) and no.4 (Fifth Grade Autobiography) as illustrations. (5%)
6. Explain poem no.14 (The Fury of Overshoes) by breaking it down to sections
and focusing on the speaker and the addressee/auditor. (5%)
7. Describe the speaker of poem no.20 (In Westminister Abbey) and explain the
significance of contexual knowledge by focusing on certain details of the
poem. (5%)
8. Explain poem no.5 (Daystar)-be sure to include the title-by relating it to
the situation underlying it. (5%)
9. Explain poem no.15 (Sonrisas)-be sure to include the title-by relating it
to the situation underlying it. (5%)
10. Explain poem no.6 (Woodchucks) by focusing on its tone. (5%)
11. Explain the significance of word choice (diction) and word order (syntax)
by using poem no.8 (Sex without Love) as example. (5%)
12. Analyze poem no.16 (The Word Plum) and no.17 (The Red Wheelbarrow)
respectively with focus on the most appropriate critical category that should
be applied to them. (5%)
13. Discuss the metaphors used in poem no.7 (The Twenty-Third Psalm). (5%)

15. Explain poem no.9 (Aunt Jennifer's Tigers) with special emphasis on the
symbolic meanings of "tigers" and "screen". (5%)
16. Summarize the contents of poem no.10 (Diving to the Wreck) and provide a
plausible symbolic reading of it. (10%)
17. Explain how a sound grasp of literary tradition (in more than one sense)
is crucial for interpreting no.18 (Come, my Celia, let us prove). (5%)
18. Explain what "parody" is by citing poems discussed in class as example.(5%)
19. Describe the dramatic situation presented in poem no.19 (The Goose Fish).
