Problem 1 (20%)
The thin-walled cylindrical pressure vessel shown in Fig. 1 has an inside
diameter of 20in. and a wall thickness of 3/8 in. The vessel is subjected to an
internal pressure of p and a torque of T. At a point on the outside surface of
the steel (E=30,000ksi and v=0.30) vessel, the strain rosette as in the right
was used to obtain the following normal strain data: εa= +36 μin./in.,
εb= +310 μin./in., and εc= +150 μin./in. Gage a and c are oriented in the
axial and hoop direction of the vessel, respectively. Determine the pressure p
and the torque T.

Problem 2 (20%)
A beam is loaded and supported as shown in Fig.2. Using the coordinate axes
shown,
a. Write equations for the shear force Vr and the bending moment Mr for any
section of the beam.
b. Determine the magnitudes and locations of the maximum shear and the maximum
bending moment in the beam.

Problem 3 (20%)
The 160-mm-diameter steel (G= 80GPa) shaft shown in Fig.3 has a 100-mm-diameter
bronze (G= 40GPa) core inserted in 3m of its right end. The bronze is securely
bonded to the steel. Determine
a. The maximum shearing stress in each of the materials.
b. The rotation of the free end of the shaft.

A beam is loaded and supported as shown in Fig.4. Please determine
a. The deflection at the left end (between A and B) of the beam.
b. The deflection midway between the supports (B and C).

Problem 5 (20%)
A Teddy bear is standing on the chair in Fig.5. The force exerted by Teddy bear
on the frame at one side of the chair is equivalent to horizontal and vertical
forces of 24N and 84N, respectively, at E and a force of 28N perpendicular to
member BH at G.
Determine the maximum tensile and compressive normal stresses on a section
midway between pins C and F. Member BH has a 10x30-mm cross section and the
30-mm dimension lies in the paper plane.
