试题 :
1. Nathaniel Hawthorne has admitted that he has "something of the hawk-eye"
about him. Do you see such a trait in any of his characters? What kinds of
effects does it have on them?
2. In "The Philosophy of Composition," Edgar Allen Poe places much emphasis on
the effect of literary works on the reader. Choose one of his short stories and
explain how his choice of literary elements create an intended effect; i.e.,
follow Poe's example and explain how form, point of view, etc. help create a
unity of effect.
3. Critics have debated over how to understand the title character of Herman
Melville's "Bartleby, the Scrivener." Is he a victim or rebel? What about the
narrator, then? Is he a victimizer and/or oppressor? Using evidence from the
text, explain your point of view.
4. What romantic conventions does Harriet Beecher Stowe use in Chapter 7 of
Uncle Tom's Cabin and how do they help advance her political purpose?
