1. What are the three ways that two sounds of the same length can differ? (A

2. What is the most important information reflected in F3 in American English?

3. What is 'locus'? Does it exist? (8%)
4. Nasals look pretty much alike on a spectrogram. Where do we look for the
main clue as to which is which? (8%)
5. Regarding the information we can get from a spectrogram, what varies from
speaker to speaker, and what is much the same? (12%)
6. Describe the difference between a wide-band and a narrow-band spectrogram,
and what each might be best used for. (16%)
7. "The acoustic structure of consonants is generally more complicated than
that of vowels." (p.199) Why? (15%)
8. The articulation of fricatives and voiceless stops be distinguished from
each other on a spectrogram? You may answer in a general way rather than

9. If we know in advance what sentence was read, segmenting sounds on a
spectrogram is not that difficult. But figuring out what was said just by
