In solid corundum (Al2O3), Al(III) is surrounded by six oxide ions in an octahedral configuration. Substitution of Cr(III) results in ruby. The Cr2O3 solid has the same structure as corundum, but is green. The unit cell in corundum (Al2O3) has lattice constants a = 0.4763 nm and c = 1.3003 nm; the unit cell in Cr2O3 has lattice constants a = 0.4960 nm and c = 1.3599nm .
