1. Answer the following questions regarding the properties of Ti(Z=22) 10%
(A)Write the ground-state electron configuration for a Ti atom.
(B)How many unpaired electrons exist in a ground-state Ti atom ?
(C)How many core electrons exist in a Ti atom that have m_l = 0 ?
(D)How many core electrons exist in a Ti atom that have l = 1 ?
(E)Give the total number of possible combinations for the quantum number of
the valence electrons in a Ti 2+ ion.
2. For the IF4 - ion, answer the following questions. 10%
(A)Give the total number of valence electrons (including the charge).
(B)Write the Lewis structure.
(C)Indicate its electron group geometry
(D)Draw the geometry of the ion.
(E)Assign the formal charges for I and F.
3. Draw the geometries of the following molecules or ions (the positions of
lone-pair electrons, if present, should also be given): ClF3, SO3 2-
XeF2, SeF4, IF5 - 10%
4. The enthalpy of vaporization of ethanol is 40 kJ/mol at its normal boiling
point of 78度C. Answer the following questions. (R = 8.314 J/K‧mol) 10%
(A)Calculate △S_system and △S_surroungding for the vaporization of 1.0 mol
ethanol at 1.0 atm and 78度C.
(B)Estimate △G_vap for the vaporization of 1.0 mol ethanol at 50度C (Assume
△H_vap and △S_vap are T-independent).
(C)Estimate the vapor pressure (in mmHg) of ethanol at 50度C.
5. A balloon filled with 10 mol of helium is heated from 25度C to 50度C at a
constant pressure of 1.0 atm. Find q,w,△E,△H,△S_sys and △S_sur for this
process. Is this process spontaneous? Assume helium behaves ideally and the
temperature of the surrounding is always 25度C;C_v = 20.8 J/K‧mol for
helium. 15%
6. Consider the cell: Cu (300g)|Cu 2+ (0.5M)||Ag + (2.0M)|Ag (150g). Answer
the following questions. (E = 0.34 V for Cu 2+ and 0.80 V for Ag +). 20%
(A)Write the cell reaction. Find its standard cell potential and equilibrium
constant.
(B)Find the cell potential when the battery is first connected.
(C)Calculate [Cu 2+],[Ag +] and the cell potential after 5.0 A of current has
flowed for 6 h. (Assume each half-cell contains 1.0 L of solution;Cu = 63.5
Ag = 108;F = 96485 coulombs)
(D)Calculate the mass of each electrode after 6 h.
(E)How long can this battery delivers a current of 5.0 A before it goes dead?
7. Answer the following questions 25%
(A)The values of △H_f for S(g),F(g), and SF6(g) are +278.8, +79.0, and -1209
kJ/mol, respectively. Estimate the average bond energy of an S-F bond.
(B)An electron in a one-dimensional box requires a wavelength of 8080 nm to
excite an electron from n=2 to n=3. Calculate the length (in nm) of this
box.(m_e = 9.1*10^(-31) kg; c = 3.0*10^8 m/s; h = 6.625*10^(-34) J.s)
(C)Indicate three types of exception to the octet rule; give one example for
each type of exception.
(D)Arrange the following atoms: C, N, O, and F, in order of (a) increasing
first ionization energy and (b) increasing size.
(E)Why is C_p greater than C_v ? Provide a conceptual rationale.
