1. Some of the elements that are essential for human life and also their
biological fuctions are listed in the following table. Give the FULL
ENGLISH NAMES for these elements and also translate their biological
fuctions into Chinese.
┌────┬──────────────────────────────┐
│Elements│ Biological Functions │
├────┼──────────────────────────────┤
│ As │May affect cell growth and heart function │
├────┼──────────────────────────────┤
│ Fe │Blood hemoglobin │
├────┼──────────────────────────────┤
│ Ca │For growth of teeth and bones, blood clotting, muscle │
│ │contraction │
├────┼──────────────────────────────┤
│ Cl │For maintaining salt balance in body fluids │
├────┼──────────────────────────────┤
│ Cr │Aids in carbohydrate metabolism │
├────┼──────────────────────────────┤
│ Co │Component of Vitamin B12 │
├────┼──────────────────────────────┤
│ F │Aids in the development of teeth and bones │
├────┼──────────────────────────────┤
│ I │Necessary for thyroid function │
├────┼──────────────────────────────┤
│ Mn │Necessary for carbohydrate metabolism and bone formation │
├────┼──────────────────────────────┤
│ K │Component of body fluids; necessary for nerve action │
└────┴──────────────────────────────┘
2. Naming the following ions in either their English common names or IUPAC
systematic names:
(a)S^2- (b)Cu^+ (c)Mg^2+ (d)Fe^3+
(e)NH4^+ (f)CN^- (g)HCO3^- (h)SO4^2-
3. Naming the following compounds in either their English common names or IUPAC
systematic names:
(a) Ba(MnO4)2 (b) MgO (c) HClO4 (d) KNO2 (e) CH3COOH
(f) NaH2PO4 (g) Fe(OH)3 (h) HNO3 (i) AgNO3 (j)NaHCO3
4. In assigning the ground state electronic configuration for atoms or
monatiomic ions, one usually follows the so-called building-up principle
(usually called Aufbau principle). This principle is composed of three
guidelines or rules. Describe the building-up principle.
5. Write the electron configuration of the following atoms or ions using both
the complete and the shorthand notations, and indicating which electrons
are the valence electons (the number inside the bracket is the atomic
number of the element):
(a) Na(11) (b) Cl(17) (c) Ca(20) (d)Br^1- (anion,35)
(e) N (7) (f) S^2- (anion, 16) (g) Al^3+ (cation, 13)
6. In describing the spatial behavior of the electron in the hydrogen atom,
one would encounter three quantum numbers which are corresponding to the
three degrees of spatial freedom of the electron: the principle quantum
number, the azimuthal quantum number (or the orbital angular momentum
quantum number), and the magnetic quantum number. What are the physical
meanings for these quantum number and also their allowed values in the case
of the hydrogen atom.
7. (a) An archeologist finds a goblet, weighing 1.62 kg, which he believes to
be made of pure gold. When 1350 cal of heat are added to the goblet,
the temperature increase by 7.8。C. Calculate the specific heat of the
gobelt. Is it made of gold? Explain.
(The specific heat of gold is 0.031 cal/(g。C))
(b) In another test, the archeologist determines that the volume of the
goblet is 205 mL. Calculate the density of the goblet and compare it to
the density of gold (19.3 g/mL), lead (11.4 g/mL), and iron (7.86 g/mL).
What is the goblet probably made of?
8. What is the density of lithium metal (in g/cm^3) if a cylinder wire with a
diameter of 2.40 mm and a length of 15.0 cm has a mass of 0.3624g?
