American Literature Since 1865 -- Midterm Exam
说明:
Identification and explication:
Identify the author (full name) and the source (full title) of the following
passages and answer the question:
1. But the raven still begueling all my sad soul into smiling,
straight I wheeled a cushioned seat in front of bird, and bust, and door;
...
This and more I sat divining, with my head at ease reclining
On the cushion's velvet lining that the lamplight gloated o'er,
But whose velvet violet lining that the lamplight gloated o'er,
She shall press, ah, nevermore!
Then methought, the air grew denser, perfumed from an unseen censer
Swung by angles whose faint foot-falls tinkled on the tufted floor.
"Wretch," I cried, " thy God hath lent thee-- by these angles he hath sent thee
Respite--respite and Nepenthe from thy memories of Lenore!
Let me quaff this kind Nepenthe and forget this lose Lenore!"
Quoth the raven, " Nevermore!"

*What changes in emotion does the narrator go through here?
What is the passage's significance in the whole poem?
2. "There," resumed the sable form, " are all whom ye have reverenced from
youth. ... This night it shall be granted you to know their secret deeds.
... By the sympathy of your human hearts for sin, ye shall scent out all
the places... where crime has been committed, and shall exult to behold
the whole earth one stain of guilt, one mighty blood-spot. Far more than
this! It shall be your's to penetrate, inevery bosom, the deep mystery of
sin, the foundation of all wicked arts, and which, inexhaustibly supplies
more evil impulses than human power-- than my power, at its utmost! -- can
make manifest in deeds."

*Who is speaking to whom?
What is the significance of this speech to the listener?
3. Poor fellow! thought I, he means no mischief; it is plain no insolence;
his aspect sifficiently evinces that his eccentricities are involuntary.
He is useful to me. I can get along with him. If I turn him away, chances
are he will fall in with some less indulgent employer, and then he will be
rudely treated, and perhaps driven forth miserably to starve. Yes. Here I
can cheaply perchase a delicious self-approval. To befriend Bartleby; to
humor him in his strange wilfulness, will cost me little or nothing, while
I lay up in my soul what will eventually prove a sweet morsel for my
conscience.
Author:_______; Title:_________
*Who is the speaker and what does the passage tell us of his personality?
4. For a long time I was reporter to a journal, of no very wide circulation,
whose editor has never yet seen fit to print the bulk of my contributions,
and, as is common with writers, I got only my labor for my pains. However,
in this case my pains were their own reward.
