At Massey University Veterinary Teaching Hospital we offer a variety of different opportunities for the veterinary graduate. What is an Internship? An internship is usually a year long program in one general area of veterinary medicine such as Small Animals, Large Animals, Equine, Wildlife etc etc. It is a year of supervised experienced that generally rotates through various disciplines (medicine, surgery, anaesthesia, pathology etc). General internships are most suited to new graduates or recent graduates. Specialised internships in one discipline (ie surgery, oncology, ophthalmology etc) are usually suited to a graduate who has done a rotating internship or a graduate with experience. What is a Residency? A residency is a program of supervised clinical experience in one aspect of veterinary medicine such as Small Animal surgery, Equine Medicine, Pathology, Radiology etc etc. A residency is usually a 3 year program and does involve some clinical research. A residency program most commonly leads to specialisation within that discipline. An internship or internship equivalent (practice experience) is usually required for a residency in most disciplines. A resident is usually enrolled in a college such as the Australian college of Veterinary Scientists or the American or European equivalents (such as ACVIM or ECVIM see Links below). The resident has to fulfill the requirements of the residency and the college they are enrolled in and then they are eligible to sit examinations in the chosen discipline.
