Ryan told his players in a meeting on Saturday night that he was getting fired, FOX Sports’ Jay Glazer reported on Sunday morning. “Guys, word on the street is that I’m getting fired. I’m not coming back,” Ryan told his team, according to Glazer. Ryan, who is in his fifth season with the Jets, has been on the hot seat all season. New general manager Josh Idzik reportedly wanted to start fresh with a new head coach upon taking over during the offseason, but Jets owner Woody Johnson was adamant in giving Ryan one more season to turn things around. The Jets were predicted to finish last in the AFC East and weren’t expected to win more than a few games after trading away Darrelle Revis during the offseason and deciding to start rookie Geno Smith at quarterback.
