本论文对乔纳森‧斯威夫特的作品《一个温和的建议》中反语的运用进行分析研究。反语 是一种极具抨击性的修辞手法，它可以产生非常强烈的讽刺效果。乔纳森‧斯威夫特是18 世纪英国杰出的讽刺大师，《一个温和的建议》是其代表作，奠定了他在英国文学史上的 不朽地位。 　　　　在《一个温和的建议》中，“献策者”提出了一个尖酸、讽刺、恐怖并且十分 血腥的建议　——　把爱尔兰的婴儿当作一种美食提供给英国统治阶级，以此解决爱尔 兰当时的贫穷与饥荒问题。在读完该文後，面对鲜明的讽刺，读者几乎无法冷静地接受 这惨无人道的建议。斯威夫特巧妙精炼地运用反语，充分展现出了爱尔兰农民悲惨的境 地与英国统治阶级令人发指的压迫，给读者勾勒出了一幅鲜血淋漓的画面，读者由此产 生强烈的共鸣。尖刻的反语在斯威夫特的笔下锋芒毕露，成为抨击当时英国统治阶级强 有力的武器。 This　thesis　aims　at　studying　the　application　of　irony　in　Jonathan　Swift’s　 A　Modest　Proposal.　Irony　is　a　forceful　rhetoric　device,　which　can　arouse　 great　satire　with　fierce　condemnation.　Jonathan　Swift,　a　great　master　of　 irony　in　the　18th　century　of　Britain,　sets　up　his　“immortal　status　in　the 　satiric　literature　with　A　Modest　Proposal　(1)”.　　　　　　 In　this　proposal,　the　“projector”　comes　up　with　a　satiric,　horrible　and 　bloody　suggestion　---　the　sale　of　the　Irish　babies　as　a　kind　of 　delicious　food　to　the　upper　class　to　solve　the　poverty　and　famine　in 　Ireland.　People　are　definitely　unable　to　accept　the　fabulous　proposal 　calmly　after　finishing　reading　this　prose.　By　a　proficient　application　of 　irony,　Swift　has　delineated　out　a　distinctive　contrast　between　the　suffering 　of　Irish　peasants　and　the　cruel　governance　of　the　English　ruling　class 　which　make　the　reader　face　a　bloody　fact　and　share　a　bitter　hatred　of 　the　ruling　class.　Furthermore,　the　acrid　ironies　used　by　Swift　are　really 　strong　weapons　to　attack　the　English　ruling　class　in　the　article.　 --
