IN-EAST, established in 1994, is a Research Center of the University of Duisburg-Essen, engaged in both disciplines in the economic and social sciences, IN-EAST is the most comprehensive university institute committed to contemporary East Asian studies in Germany. Chinese and Japanese studies are the main focus of the research program and graduate curriculum. Successful applicants will pursue a topic in the IN-EAST research program on risk shifts and institutional transformations in economic or social scientific and East Asian regional perspective. Research topics will address one of four large processes of global transformations—market transformations, individualization, decentralization and transnationalization—and how these play out in specific East Asian and European comparative contexts. The course program includes an intensive methodological training unit in East Asia hosted by the Institute of Social Sciences at the University of Tokyo and Renmin University of China in Beijing. Successful applicants will receive financial support and on-site mentoring for field research in East Asia. The Research Training Group cooperates closely with the White Rose East Asia Centre at the Universities of Leeds and Sheffield in the UK. IN-EAST is part of a network of European Research Schools of Contemporary East Asian Studies (EastAsiaNet). The Research Training Group seeks candidates with advanced languages skills in Chinese or Japanese and disciplinary training at the MA level or equivalent in Economics, Political Science or International Relations, Sociology, Geography or in a regional studies MA with a strong disciplinary component. Stipends for doctoral fellows are for three years, contingent on successful completion of each year. Post-doctoral positions in the form of an employment contract are awarded for two years.
