Some Renaissance popes were not known for their learning. Vasari, in his "Life of Michelangelo" has a good story which is typical of the martial Christianity of that period. Pope Julius Ⅱ went one day to see a statue of himself which Michelangelo was executing. The right hand of the statue was raised in a dignified attitude, and the artist consulted the pope as to whether he should place a book in the left. "Put a sword into it," said Julius, "or of letters I know but little."
