The dollar has been unexpectedly strong this year, and through the first nine months of 2005, Berkshire reported a loss of $897 million on its positions. But the company did record a gain of $29 million in the current quarter and said it has recognized $2.1 billion in pretax gains since implementing its short position against the dollar in 2002.
