1. A coffee manufacturer is interested in whether the mean daily consumption
of regular-coffee drinkers is less than that of decaffeinated-coffee
drinkers. Assume the population standard deviation for those drinking
regular coffee is 1.20 cups per day and 1.36 cup per day for those drinking
decaffeinated-coffee. A random sample of 50 regular-coffee drinkers showed
a mean of 4.35 cups per day. A sample of 40 decaffeinated-coffee drinkers
showed a mean of 5.84 cups per day.
(a) Use the 0.01 significance level and the 5-step procedure to perform the
test. (30 pts)
(b) Find the p-value. (5 pts)
2. The NBA (National Basketball Association) had 39 black top executives
(presidents or vice president) among its 388 senior managers. Meanwhile,
MLB (Major League Baseball) had only 11 blacks among its 307 top
administrators. Use the 5-step procedure to test at the 0.05 significance
level if this reveals the NBA has significantly more black participation
in higher levels of management. (25 pts)
3. Martin Motors had in stock three cars of the same make and model. The
president would like to compare the gas consumption of the three cars
(labeled car A, car B, car C) using four different types of gasoline.
For each trial, a gallon of gasoline was added to an empty tank, and
the car was driven until it ran out of gas. The following table shows the
number of miles driven in each trial.
