Wilt Chamberlain

Wilt Chamberlain defined the term freak of nature in the NBA, given his
one-of-a-kind physical attributes. Standing 7’1〃 with a 7’8〃 wingspan,
the Philadelphia 76ers icon was in a league of his own, as shown by the 70+
records etched in his name. If that wasn’t enough, his track and field,
along with his weightlifting accolades, only proved he was an anomaly.
Not to say Chamberlain was humble about his accomplishments either. The Hall
of Famer never hesitated to call himself the greatest basketball player,
weightlifter and shot putter, with the list never ending. His NBA stats could
make for a record book by themselves.
Strangely enough, his individual brilliance worked against him too, largely
because of his reputation as a ‘stat padder’ and ‘gunner.’ His critics
regularly called him out for prioritizing individual stats over winning games.
Showcasing his playmaking skills
From scoring 100 points in a single game to collecting 55 rebounds in
another, Chamberlain was a one-man wrecking crew. However, these impeccable
numbers didn’t always translate into winning basketball, something his
naysayers used against him as well.
Soon enough, he acknowledged it and shifted his focus to involving his
teammates. The 1965-66 season was a prime example, when Chamberlain had the
perfect response to everyone who labeled him a ‘goon’ and ‘gunner.’
Leading the league in scoring and rebounding in 1966, Wilt surprised most
that season by finishing seventh in assists.
The seven-footer averaged 5.2 assists per game in the 1965-66 season, with
every other player in the Top 10 being a guard.
“Everybody knows I can score 100 points a game if need be. But the purpose
of this game is to win, not set records,” stated Chamberlain.
Joining the Lakers was a turning point
What was indeed a historic trade, the 76ers traded Chamberlain to the Los
Angeles Lakers ahead of the 1968-69 season. The decision also helped unlock
other facets of Wilt’s game, considering that the veteran center was willing
to adjust his role with the Lakers.
At the time, the Lakers roster boasted shooters like Jerry West, Elgin
Baylor, Gail Goodrich and Jimmy McMillan.
“What we needed was some defensive work and backboard work. It gave me a
chance to illuminate another part of my game, and so therefore, I abandoned
the fadeaway jump shot, finger rolls, and the dunks to give them a chance to
shoot,” revealed Wilt in a 1986 interview.
The decision to take a backseat and focus on other aspects of the game
eventually benefited the Hall of Famer, who won his second NBA title in 1972.
