Then the Heat center attempted to shatter any notion that pride prevents him from accepting responsibility for his on-court struggles this season. O'Neal said he is having a ''terrible'' season and needs to do more to help the Heat overcome a slow start that has left the team in last place in the Eastern Conference for two weeks. The Heat (7-17) plays at Atlanta (12-12) on Wednesday, looking to win back-to-back games for just the second time this season. It has been that rough of a stretch for the Heat, which needed a fourth-quarter comeback at home Monday night to beat a Timberwolves team that owns the worst record in the league. And it has been that difficult of a start for O'Neal, 35, who is in the midst of his least productive season, averaging just 14.3 points and 7.7 rebounds in 27.8 minutes. He has averaged 25.7 points and 11.5 rebounds over his 16-year career. ''It's terrible,'' O'Neal said Tuesday when asked to evaluate his play. ``When you win, it's easier to accept. You can't say nothing. I have to adjust. We still have to adjust. Hopefully, it doesn't take a full season of failing for us to adjust.'' The tone of O'Neal's comments Tuesday were much different from the more defiant and critical stance he took two weeks ago when he expressed frustration with teammates for not getting him the ball enough and balked at his diminishing role. But while speaking with reporters Tuesday for the first time since the Heat returned last week from a 2-4 Western Conference trip, O'Neal talked about having more patience with his teammates and finding a way to be productive in other ways. O'Neal fouled out in the fourth quarter of each of the past two games, including Saturday when the Heat blew a lead against Indiana to lose its third game in a row at home. Heat coach Pat Riley said O'Neal's dip in production is due largely to teams defending him with more zone-type coverages this season, making it more difficult to pass to O'Neal on halfcourt post-ups. As a result, his shot attempts have drastically decreased from more than 17 a game over his career to 10 this season. Riley said the issue could be addressed if O'Neal becomes more mobile and less stationary. Because Miami shooters have not consistently made outside shots, more defenders are crowding around O'Neal, Riley said. ''I do believe Shaquille will find a rhythm, a better rhythm,'' Riley said. ``There are some things I think he can do. He's got to get it on the move. That's where we've done so much work tweaking the offense, getting our players to see him. We miss him a lot in those possessions.'' O'Neal was 6 of 11 from the field Monday, marking the first time in 12 games he has attempted more than 10 shots. He won't say how many attempts he expects each game but said it should be in double figures. ''More than 10, so I can get into my game,'' he said. ``My son can't even get into the game with seven shots.'' PASSING PROBLEMS But getting the ball to O'Neal has proved costly at times. Dwyane Wade averaged more than six turnovers the past three games -- many of them coming while he tried to feed O'Neal. Wade understands O'Neal's concerns, but said he also needs to be a bit more understanding. 'The main thing I try to tell him is, `We're trying to look for you, but it's the way the defense is playing,' '' Wade said. ``If we keep trying too much, we're going to turn the ball over. I get three of my turnovers trying to force the ball in there.'' In theory, if O'Neal wants to do more, he has to move more. That has been difficult until recently because of nagging knee and thigh injuries that have lingered since October. O'Neal, who has taken cortisone shots in his surgically repaired left knee, joked he has had to ''rely on almost illegal things'' just to play. Riley said he has also tried to lighten the load on O'Neal by using backup Alonzo Mourning, 37, in frequent but shorter stretches. He evaluates the position collectively more than how each player does individually. Against the Timberwolves, O'Neal and Mourning combined for 25 points, 18 rebounds and six blocks -- far beyond the numbers either is consistently capable of producing alone at this stage of their careers. ADJUSTMENT PROCESS ''He was Superman. He was indestructible. He was unstoppable. He was all those things,'' Riley said of O'Neal in his younger days. ``But as he gets older and things slow down, he can still be effective. He is going through the process of adjusting to things he cannot do.'' There's still a bit of denial, though. Always has been. Probably always will be. Take, for instance, O'Neal's logic on his recent foul trouble. ''I only get in foul trouble when I help,'' he said. ``I haven't really committed a foul on my man yet.'' But he's willing to adjust if that's what it takes to salvage a season. ''I accept that,'' O'Neal said. ``I've always been tested. I've always stood up. Nothing can break me down.'' --
