Aminu was meant to be patrolling the paint, rebounding and scoring closer to the basket rather than farther away. That’s why coach Rick Carlisle and his staff have worked hard on it with the 6-9, 220-pound small forward. Even though he’s a good rebounder and has a nose for the ball, which invariably leads to some putback points on the offensive end, Carlisle wants everybody on the team to be able to make a shot if left open. That includes Aminu and even Tyson Chandler, if he gets lonely on the 3-point arc. If it’s a guard driving to the basket, Carlisle said it becomes riskier for Aminu to try to be a rebounder because the team is better served by him racing back defensively to stop any potential fast break off a missed shot. Aminu’s defense is another of his calling cards. But for now, defense and rebounding remain the two things he does best.
