But given Smith’s history, it generated a bigger-than-deserved wave of attention. Carter said Wednesday he was a little surprised when, in the fourth quarter of the Mavericks’ 110-108 win at Madison Square Garden, that Smith pulled his headband down over his ear. Surprised, but not upset. He thought Smith’s actions were all in good fun. “It didn’t bother me,” Carter said. “I hear everybody making a big deal about it, but he didn’t pull it over my eyes where I couldn’t see or play the game, so it wasn’t a big deal. But I know because it’s him, it’s an issue. He didn’t want me to make any more shots. It was just funny to me.” Carter had made consecutive 3-pointers when Smith pulled the headband. He also tried to tug on Carter’s arm sleeve. This would not have become an issue were it not for Smith’s past. When the Knicks won at American Airlines Center in January, cameras caught Smith untying Shawn Marion’s shoelace when they were waiting for a free throw attempt. When it happened again in a game against Detroit, Smith was fined $50,000 by the NBA. There has been no word from the league on whether more punishment will be forthcoming for Smith.
