Dalembert, who as a free agent signed a two-year, $7.5 million contract over the summer, is averaging 6.7 points and 6.5 rebounds. “He’s shown his moments,” said Mavericks owner Mark Cuban. “I just don’t think he’s been in a position where he’s been expected to perform to help a team win since his first or second years.” Last season, the Mavericks signed Chris Kaman to a one-year, $8 million contract and anointed him the starter. Though he wound up starting 52 games, his minutes decreased as the season wore on and so, it appeared, did Kaman’s effort level. In other words, rather than inspiring Kaman, cutting his minutes seemed to have an adverse effect. Are the Mavericks concerned the same will happen with Dalembert? “No, I think Sam is the exact opposite,” Cuban said. “Sam is figuring out how to contribute. I think he’s disappointed in himself. I don’t think he thinks he’s playing well. He wants to get better.” Though he was ill Saturday and unable to coach or attend Saturday’s game, Rick Carlisle said after Friday’s practice that Dalembert has maintained a professional attitude since his minutes dropped. “He’s been good with all that kind of stuff, and we need him,” Carlisle said. “He’s our guy with the most length who can impact the game defensively the best. Dalembert has slipped into a deep funk the past three weeks. His production is down, his body language is bad, and his play on the court has suffered. Dalembert started the first 10 games this season, then came off the bench on Nov. 18 against Philadelphia. He hasn’t started the past four games. So, how is he handling the demotion? “He’s handled it well,” Carlisle said. “The night I sat him against Philly — and I thought that was a good move — he couldn’t have been more cooperative and encouraging of the reasons and all that kind of stuff. “It turned out he was the best player to play that night. I put him in as the second or third [center].” Against Philadelphia, Dalembert was 3 of 6 from the field with eight points, a season-high 14 rebounds and three blocks. But over the last five games he’ s had only three field goals in 16 attempts, 11 points, 25 rebounds and three blocks. In that time, the Mavs have mainly gone with the shorter DeJuan Blair and inexperienced Bernard James at center. That’s not a bad effort in your season debut. "My production was good," Wright said after the game. "I’m still a ways off from where I want to be overall physically. It was a good start." It was great to see him out there," Mavericks assistant coach Monte Mathis said of Wright. "His athleticism on defense, on offense, all of those in-between shots that we know he’s really good at -- he showed us that again. He did a great job with the game plan, the schemes on defense. He’s just an experienced guy, so it’s great to have him back." With all the centers healthy and Dallas holding a comfortable lead, Mathis decided it was best to not bring Dalembert into the game. "Going into it, it wasn’t set that Sam wasn’t going to play, but it just ended up being that way," Mathis said.
